My average trip is around 15-17 (if lucky). Barely go on the highway.

Tell me about. Stock, standard transmission M235. I do notice it go higher in the highway, but not by much.

Dang fuel economy wasn't even on my radar when considering between the 230 and 240, but what a difference. I'm getting around 32mpg in town driving. I drive in Eco mode until my oil temp gets above 175, and then it goes straight to sport +. I have a 230i with elite V2, Intake, and free flow exhaust.
A full tank on the highway yielded just under 40mpg but that was in eco mode on cruise control on the interstate. |

I came from a 325i straight 6 too, albeit 2.5L engine, I get roughly 50-70kms more per tank in the e92. Sounds about right I guess, but it has a heavier chassis and youd think engine tech improvements in almost 10yrs at BMW would've made way for better fuel efficiency. Not sure if the e92 had a bigger fuel tank tho.

Actually, I find here in New England a fairly large difference between summer and winter gas mix. In the summer I average 27-28 and after the switch over to winter mix 24-25. Car completely stock, even with the hated run flat tires.
Can I say? YMMV....lol. |

There certainly is; I believe around Oct they change the gas formulation to reduce the chance of knocking (or something) due to the cold weather. Then they switch back to the 'summer mix' in April/May.

Boston,
No mods, yet, running around 24-26MPG, 80/20 highway / back road mix. Stock tire pressures at ambient temperature, with the RFT's for now. Not super aggressive on the loud pedal, I tend to practice smooth inputs and to keep in "track shape". I tend to run between comfort and sport respectively directly related to the mix noted above. Tried ECO mode in November on a drive to Philly, got about 28MPG at ~80 MPH but running in ECO mode is rather strange and interesting at the same time. Probably will not do this often but it is interesting to fool with... Good thread. A little confusing and inconsistent with the data but cool query!

Agreed. I guess I am a bit surprised at the wide divergence; although you are right that some of this is apples and oranges...

Wide variations in MPG
In my '18 230i, the mileage varies greatly. I get around 25-26 around town, but that is mostly short trips, with a fair amount of stop lights, but I avoid the 5 mph backups. Now with my winter tires on, it is a bit lower, but that might be also due to the winter fuel as well.
However, on interstate trips I get 33+ at 70-75 mph. I have found that the trip computer measured gas mileage is very close to what I measure by calculating fill-up to fill-up.

I get around 28 MPG with a combination of low speed back road, highway, city mix of probably 20/60/20. I'd love to get the exact number but I was car #3 in a 4-car hit and run last week. My car is in the shop for who knows how long
I have a BMS Stage 1 tune, that's the only mechanical/performance mod. I'm not averse to spirited driving but I mostly drive in a way that says "I'm an adult and I bought this car and I'm not going to thrash it unnecessarily" Heck, I had the car for over 2 years before I ever got around to leaving a little rubber on the road before getting new tires. may pay dividends to reset the transmission computer/TBA using the method found on this thread: https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1020477 And have it slowly adapt and relearn your driving style, might help with fuel efficiency. |

I'm getting 22/23 MPG, driving 70% highway and not driving very aggressively. The car is bone stock, 6MT RWD M235i.
I might have to do the reset like the gentleman above mentioned. |

2018 M240i RWD with 6 speed manual. 11k miles, fuel tracked each tank. Lowest mileage was 19.9mpg, very first tank. Since then, lowest has been 22.2, highest at 28.7, with average of 25.1mpg. Mix of city and highway driving. Not light footed either, so I’m delighted with the results. Fun, economical car!

2014 228 M-Sport, stock.
The attachments ended up backwards. First photo (689 miles) is Huntsville AL to Oklahoma City area (US-72 and I-40). Second photo (1,212 miles) is the total trip - restarting in OKC to Albuquerque (I-40) with strong headwinds and gaining altitude (to 5,000'). The average MPH includes gas and rest stops. Awesome car! |

Lifetime average is 27.3. I drive in Eco mode most of the time, in-town. I'll open her up in Sport mode, when driving between cities, on the highway.
