Has anyone worked out the coding for non-dazzle high beam and variable headlight distribution?

OK, can I get cliff notes on this?

My GTI HIDs which have AFS level up & down, and then the left moves left and the right moves right. So it looks like they calibrate all four directions.

My 228i has light package but does not have the auto-highbeams package or the driver assistance plus (so there's no forward camera, just a light sensor).

What benefit will I get for coding variable light distribution back in?

FWIW - my build sheet does show variable light decoding.

Further confusing the issue, this is what BMWUSA.com says that a 2-series with lighting package comes with:

obviously that's not true, since all our build sheets have variable light decoding.

I was able to use the driver profile to remember the setting (ac off)....no coding needed

However, the fan still comes on everytime

I don't have driver assistance plus either.... nor the auto-high beam

But if you remove 8S4 (variable light decoding) you get

"the light beam is adapted according to the vehicle's speed. When driving in the city, a low beam is used to better illuminate the road immediately ahead without dazzling oncoming drivers. And when driving at higher speeds, the Xenon headlights are raised to increase visibility. The result: outstanding illumination and a more relaxed driving experience."

like shown here.... http://www.bmw.com.my/com/en/newvehi...omics_ahc.html

So the low beams illuminate lower at lows speeds and point higher at higher speeds...

if you had 5AC (high beam assist)
and you remove 5AP (anti-dazzle high beam decoding)

then you get this...

Ya I think the "variable light distribution" shown there is another typo like the "16 speaker HK system" or the "hands free trunk lid opener"

You should send an email to BMWNA and ask about the variable light distribution :-D
There is no mention in the M235 as the lighting package is standard

Does it make sense ?

pikcachu - I may have succeeded in doing this, but I am not completely sure. I noticed that now the left beam appears to wander more to the left than it did before and now, when i activate the high beams, i can see the left beam move to the center - as though it were trying to avoid blinding cars in the opposite lane.

Can you confirm that's the right behavior that I should be seeing?

I tried comparing your videos to my car, but the difference seems very slight so I can't be sure if it worked.

so you have option 5AC (high beam assist) in your car...?

and what did you code ?

I don't have (high beam assist) so the only thing I can activate is Variable light distribution...

"Variable Light Distribution has several different modes of operation (for Low Beam):

1 - City Light: Shallow and Very Wide Beam Pattern active from 0 - 50kph (30MPH) (Both Headlamps are Panned outwards 12° horizontal from center and 0.7° lowered vertically)

2 - Standard Light: Same Basic Beam Pattern as with 8S4 Enabled and Headlamp Switch Set to Auto. Active from 50 - 110kph (30MPH - 68MPH)

3 - Guiding Fog Light - Shallow and Wider Beam Pattern Enabled with the Front Fog Lamps On and Headlamp Switch in Auto and Speed 0 - 110kph (Both headlamps are panned outwards 8° horizontal from center and lowered 0.7° vertically)

4 - Highway Light - Long Throw Pattern illuminating approx. 25% further than Standard Light. Active from 110 to 250kph (68MPH- 155MHP). (Driver's Side Headlamp is panned 3.5° outwards Horizontal from center and lowered 0.25° vertically, while the passenger side headlamp is raised 0.2° vertical)"

ok... well the variable light distribution should have nothing to do with the high beam in our cars as ours don't have the camera so they have no idea if there is oncoming traffic or not...

What did you code ?

What did you code ?
Check yours? Pull the high beam / flash to pass and it looks like it moves to the center more.

I just edited the vehicle order, deleted the variable light decoding, saved, coded the folder and the re-coded the FDL

So you are saying that going at constant speed in a straight line with the high beam on, if there is oncoming traffic your left high beam moves to the center?
sunset here is not till around 1hr from now so it won't be dark till around 2hrs but I'll see if I can give it a try...
Also what speed where you testing?

Also I coded this which is for the anti-dazzle just to see what happens but because I don't have the HBA or the camera i don't think it will work but just in case here are the 3 settings in FEM_BODY that get changed if you remove 5AP (anti-dazzle decoding) if you had 5AC (high beam assist)

ok so you are saying...

You turn high beam on against a wall and the left beam now moves to the center more than before?

do you have any video before-after?

No, i don't have before video. Was hoping someone had noticed this behavior. It's the most significant thing I noticed after removing the variable decoding but I don't know if it was part of that or if it's default behavior.

Tomorrow I'll take video.

Ok... I had a chance to test on the drive back from a movie....
I can see the VLD working now.... and it's exactly as described...

When you drive below 30mph.. the left low beam points wider out to the left... as soon as you pass 30mph the left beam shifts to the right....
And that explains what you see when you did your static test... cause at 0mph you are below 30mph so low left beam points out, when you flash high beam the headlight moves to the right

Also if you drive below 30mph and turn high beam something moves to the right also but i think it's probably that the high beam and the low beam are linked together so that the VLD goes to the standard position not to blind people with the high beams...

Couldn't get a chance to test the 3rd mode over 68mph yet but it's supposed to start pointing the lights further away once you pass 68

I think 68mph is a little high as the upper bound of second tier light pattern, can it be changed to like 50 or 55mph?

probably this C_AFS_E_V_LO in FEM_BODY

put the videos side by side...
You can see how the one on the left, the left beam goes up and widens at the same time while the video on the right the beams go straight up

Default to auto start stop being off?

Thanks!
