Wheel Center Cap Corrosion Issue ..........

How common is this issue? I want them to be replaced under warranty and the dealer drags their feet to file a request and respond.

It looks as though a screw driver or blade has been used to remove the centre cap, looking at the marks under the corrosion. That will have damaged the clear coat, allowing moisture to wick under it and corrode the aluminium. You may be lucky getting a warranty fix, but they may just put it down to wear and tear. It is best to not allow anyone to lever the caps out, they should be pushed out gently from the back.

Anytime I have tyres fitted I take the wheels to the tyre fitter myself with the centre caps, balance weights and valve caps already removed and only use specialist tyre places that use tyre back-mounting to avoid bead-breaking on the outside face of the wheel to avoid scratching.

With wheels that have a machined clear coat finish I have also found this type of corrosion is common if the wheels are used in the winter on salty roads, the clear coat doesn’t seem to adhere as well to the bare aluminium as primed paint finishes and stone chips can cause this type of wicking corrosion, too.

Tires have been installed at a reputable shop at 11K and the center caps have been pushed from behind. I was there. We have no salt on the roads here on the Peninsula.

Otherwise, all wheels are absolutely flawless with no curb rash or tire mounting marks and waxed twice every year.

Looks to be signs of mechanical damage where marked, more visible marks than would be expected from just corrosion pitting:

Your enhanced picture is irrelevant. It doesn't show any damage to the wheel hub from prying the center cap. I am very well aware of alloy wheel corrosion going back to the 80's and all my cars have been bought from new. They all have been replaced under warranty.

You said you remove your wheels for service. This is a big commitment and nice if it is convenient.

You maybe have a show car but mine is just a pampered daily driver. Afterall, the outcome will not be a big deal because I don't foresee any other BMW in my future.

The clear coat is obviously damaged in the areas I marked, from whatever reason if it wasn’t prying. That is why you have corrosion under the clear coat, emanating from the damaged area. The clear coat may have come off in the worst surface area, but with the straight-on view it is hard to tell in the photo. I’ve seen plenty of clear coated machined wheels with this problem, whether from BMW or other manufacturers.

My car is far from a show car, it has done plenty of winter driving and ski resort visits, it is now in my sons possession and being prepped for track use this summer, while I wait for the replacement M2 that will also be a daily driver in all conditions. I just find it more convenient to drop off one set of wheels for new tyres while the car is on the other set. I have the time and equipment to do most of my own work, but I use a trusted shop for tyre fitting who do the work properly, which I find rare for most tyre shops.

9 oclock in that picture absolutely looks like mechanical damage. No idea how it happened, but it sure looks like it happened.

Is it just one wheel, or all of them?

It's a common/known problem. Depends on your relationship with your dealer & age of your car as to whether they will replace/refinish them for you.

Yep. Someone either pryed wheel bore in an effort to get the cap off (perhaps steal it) or damage was caused when the wheel was put on the wheel balancer after a tire install and hub mount of the balancer was put on tight and damaged the clear in the process (quite common and the likely source based on the photo), and some sort of contaminant impacted the clear coat/alloy.

It's a 2019 that's likely been in service since 2018, thus it's closing in on 5 years of age. Poop happens. A wheel specialist will make quick work of this issue.

why would the center cap ever need to be removed while on the car ?

if the wheel/tire were off the car wouldn't you pop it out from the back ?

do alignments require the center cap removed while car is up on the alignment machine ?

I believe you may have found the most probable cause.......... the wheel balancer from adjusting the wheel on the mandrel.

This tire set has been installed 2 years ago and this corrosion started about a year after on only one wheel. Now, this is on all four at different stage, the one pictured as the worst.
