Pedestrian Protection System Failure

Hello,

while driving home tonight from work about half way through the journey my Pedestrian Protection System Failure flagged up on my dash saying i needed to go straight to the BMW dealer and to not open the bonnet. i read the codes and got 930A91, which is a communication failure which some have suggest maybe the front sensor needs cleaning or replacing. will i be able to open the bonnet without the hinges activating and is the car still drive able in the meantime.
any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated as my MOT was meant to be tomorrow

The newer cars have a sensor just for a pedestrian hit. Not sure what the car does for a pedestrian hit vs a car collision but it might raise the back of the hood to keep them from hitting the windshield (I know some cars do that).

Your sensor may have gotten wet or had a rock hit. Before going to the dealer where it might be a non warranty issue due to something hitting the sensor, I'd check the sensor. Google how:

There are pyrotechnic cartridges in the hood hinges (like those that are used for airbags) that are triggered when specific sensors detect a pedestrian collision. They need to be replaced if they are fired, and they will sometimes damage the hood when they are deployed as well.

Don't mess with this system. Get it checked by people who know what they are doing, generally meaning a BMW dealership.
