M235i vs. M2 vs. M2 Competition
I currently have a slightly modded, low mileage '16 M235i. I bought it in 2020 with 6K miles and it now has 18K miles. I've made a few modest mods and based on those it should be just a little under 400hp. JB4, BMS intake, catless downpipe. The 6MT and low miles make it a bit of a unicorn. I don't have a long commute, live in the PNW, and work with my wife so we often drive her car. It really is just a "fun" performance car in our lives for the time being and hopefully foreseeable future.
I am still making payments on it and at 42 when I bought it, imagined it being the last "fun" car I'd own, keeping it until I die/cars get banned/fuel is unobtanium... but... It's held value like crazy and I could sell it for several thousand more than I paid for it/well over double what I owe on it. I keep feeling tempted when I see low mileage M2/M2 Competitions. From what I gather, the M2 isn't far off from what I currently have, at least engine-wise. The M2 Comp is what really tempts me. Am I crazy? I *can* afford it, but I'm just kicking the payments can a few more years down the road. Do I suck it up because my M235i is a (nearly) 400hp "sleeper" or do I give into temptation and cash in on the unicorn and get a similarly low mileage M2/M2 Comp? Honestly, depends on the goals.
If you’re going to actually have fun and track it - the M2/Comp is a better starting point. Wider track, and better wheel options, and yes, more power (you’re at about 350-360ish with a JB4 Map 2 and no E85) If you’re just driving it - keep it and enjoy it. No reason to pay a surcharge to get a slightly faster car |

The difference between the m235i to M2 Comp (and dare I suggest even the M2 CS) is really not that big if youre willing to modify the car.
The things that are harder to beat with the aftermarket are the wider tire fitments the M2 fenders allow, the dual clutch transmissiom's raw shift speed, and the S55's closed deck design if you eventually want to upgrade to big turbos. If those are your hangups, get the M2 Comp and never look back. Otherwise, call up your favorite BMW specialist shop to fit an M-performance LSD, a set of KW Clubsports, and the widest recommended wheel & tire package from APEX. That car will be far cooler, faster, and more fun than a stock M2. Last edited by 230iZTR; 03-28-2023 at 12:40 AM.. |

If you want just straight line power, stick with your M235i and pay it off.
M2 and M2C really shine on the track, both in terms of handling but also how they manage oiling and heat. M235i needs a oil pan baffle for the track. |

Do whatever makes you the most happy. You can't go wrong with any scenario as long it's aligning with what you really want.
I am in the same predicament with a new M2 build on order with my local dealer and I have about a year or so to determine if I want to stay with my m240i or get into a new M2. It's a tough call when you have equity built up and when you've spent money on installing modifications. I don't know what I'm going to do.

You are 42 and you think thats going to be your last fun car? Impossible
3 years are not too bad especially if the car appreciates, you get 2nd chance at purchasing whatever you want. If you really can afford afford it, like really afford it. I had say why the hell not, you only live once. ^^ |
