BimmerTech Amp Tunes - Factory and User Shared
With a number of people now installing the BimmerTech amp into their 2-series cars, I thought it would be useful to have a thread where people could find and share different tunes for the amp.
This lead post will be used to hold links to various shared tunes added in subsequent posts. The second post will define how the tunes can be uploaded / downloaded for sharing. The third and later posts will be for people to upload tunes that can be referenced here and to explain how those tunes were developed. All tunes were created using version 3 of the Audiotek Fischer DSP tool (http://www.audiotec-fischer.de/cms/l...c-tool-v3.html) except where noted. Manufacturer Tunes F22, HiFi system: Direct download link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3k...ew?usp=sharing F22, harmon kardon system, normal volume levels: Direct download link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3k...ew?usp=sharing F22, harmon kardon system, high volume levels: Stored as ".pdf": http://www.2addicts.com/forums/attac...1&d=1456862711 User Tunes: Zooks527, harmon kardon system, from post #3: http://www.2addicts.com/forums/attac...1&d=1456863508 I hope people find this useful.

This is the tune I've been using of late. I find it works well at moderately high volumes. At lower volumes (such as when you have a passenger and are having a conversation), this tune benefits from 1 or 2 clicks of fade towards the rear. For me, this seems to tone down some of the harshness of the hk tweeters at the expense of some of the perceived width of the stage.
The base was BimmerTech's issued harmon kardon tune of 2/15/16.
EDIT: I also muted the center channel with the software.

It will be interesting to see any differences in the cab profiles! I'll be working on that as soon as the weather gets warmer.

Zooks, I like your tune. It did take some harshness out, and sounds great at high levels, thank you. Amp done, BAVSound Speakers are next... I guess.
But, as always, the lower levels continue to make this HK package the worst car audio system I've ever heard in my entire life. |

FWIW, I muted the center channel on my system last week, in response to the continuing stream of people commenting on how unplugging the center channel helps markedly. Seems to widen the stage, but also to shift it towards the back. I think more experimentation is justified there.

Properly cataloged I wouldn't mind having all BimmerTech Amp tunes in one spot. F22 folks aren't the only ones with innovative insights into tuning the perfect sound. I would be curious to see what others have done in similar cars. Besides us F23 owners will use different settings from all the F22 folks anyway.

Software. Opened the Audiotech Fischer software used to load the tune, selected the center channel from the list above the graph (Output E), clicked "Mute" in the box to the right of the graph, clicked "Save and Store". Doesn't get much easier. You can also drag the "Channel Gain and Output Level" slider all the way to the left, if you're a Belt-and-Suspenders type.

Here are 3 tunes I got from Bimmer-Tech for my hi-fi system on my F30. I used the bsw.bimmertech version. Seemed more rich to me.

Why? The stereo in the 3 Series is completely (and drastically) different then the one in the 2 Series -- particularly the HK systems in each.

My first objective will be a flat profile (not acoustically) as if you installed an amp that doesn't allow for tuning and DSP changes. |

So has anyone come up with some better tunes here? The bimmer-tech tunes for the HK system are awful. Right now I'm not very happy with my $1,000 investment if even the guys selling the amp only make it sound worse than stock!
I spent a few hours playing with the software which made it a bit better but I'm no professional |

I bought an amp about six months ago, but for various reasons (mainly my laziness) I only just got around to installing it (with a few mechanical issues - see the other thread) and I too, am extremely disappointed with the "default" sound using the Bimmertech tunes (either of them). It's all middle with a big hole in the mid-bass and no sparkle, especially at low volume. If I'm being generous, maybe it sounds a *touch* better if you crank it, and maybe what is there has a bit more clarity and authority, but perhaps that is just as much to do with the Technic ASD bypass harness I installed at the same time. The overall EQ as it stands is horrible and not at all nice to listen to. The OEM amp sound, while unrefined, was more pleasing to listen to by default, and frankly, I almost preferred the sound with the new amp reset to completely flat (!) although I didn't leave it like that as I didn't want to fry any speakers due to the lack of crossover filtering. When I pointed this out to Bimmertech, they just suggested that I play with the settings myself to make it sound how I wanted. I said that wasn't the point! I had bought what was advertised as a turn-key solution, and I deliberately waited until they'd done the F22 HK tune before I did so. They had no excuse. Come on, people. Speak up. Who has a tune that they're truly happy with? Or is this just the Emperor's New Clothes...? |

I did amp up the gain on all channels a bit just because I want all the volume I can get but didn't go too crazy. Why is this system still fairly quiet? |

Interesting. I'll try the F30 tune, if only to see what the EQ curves look like. Maybe the sweet spot is those curves plus the F22 time alignment.

OK, here's my contribution. I started with the F30 BSW Bimmertech tune, which I agree sounds immediately more interesting than any of the F22 tunes, and tweaked it a little. I raised the sub crossover point a bit, and added a mild roll-off to the top end to tame the tweeters. Finally, I matched the time alignment to the F22 tune, although I tweaked that a little too to get the front imaging better [EDIT: perhaps a little right-biased... will fix when I have time...] It's still lacking in the mid-range, but I think that's a limitation of the speakers. It may also still be a bit bright for some people, but I like that. I left the center speaker on but at a lower level because I decided the sound stage was just a bit too wide without it. I pushed the levels a little, but it's loud enough for me. I haven't triggered any chimes, though, so YMMV. I'll play with it some more over the weekend, to try to get a bit more tone in the midrange, but I suspect I may be ordering some Eton B100Ws before the month is out.

Just a follow-up to say that I am very happy with the amp now that I have managed to come up with a tune that I think actually sounds good. I don't normally like to complain in a public forum, but I did give Bimmertech a chance to respond privately first and they didn't have a good solution, and when Tony88 opened the floodgates, I couldn't help myself...
After having driven and listened a lot more yesterday evening, I am once more totally happy that the amp is a worthy upgrade, even with the stock HK speakers. The clarity and authority is greatly improved, and (at the risk of it sounding like a cliche) I really have heard some things in some familiar music that I haven't heard before (breathy backing vocals, subtle percussion, string tone etc.) The speakers are definitely now the limiting factor, as they are still a bit rough in the lower mid (cheap cones, pitiful magnets) and at the top end (cheap metal-dome tweeters). The only thing holding me back about immediately ordering some front door replacements is the idea of having to rip the doors apart to fit them, and maybe I have better things to spend my car-mod money on for the time being, like the Dinan springs I've been coveting. I would still like to hear from others who have been using the Bimmertech tune. Are you actually happy with it, or are you just not in this thread, or keeping quiet because you don't like it but are embarrassed to admit that you spent all that money on something you don't like. Or maybe you've tweaked the tune and fixed it yourself? (but if so, why didn't you post it back here?) I'm not a professional car stereo guy, but I have done community theatre sound for many years, and I have tuned rooms using RTAs and SMAART and other such tools. I believe myself to have a good ear, and a taste for all sorts of music, and I know what sounds good, and most people seem to agree with me. I believe my tune to be a huge improvement, and I hope others find it so too. There are a couple of things I want to tweak (I rushed the front time alignment because I was late for a dental appointment!) and the bass is a little boomy (I took out most of the rather drastic 125Hz notch that was in the F30 tune, and maybe I took out too much), but did 20 miles last night with the music cranked and a big smile on my face, so that says a lot. My contention with Bimmertech about their provided F22 tunes stands, as do my concerns about the geometry of the mounting plate, at least in my car (see the install thread about how the amp is wedged hard under a plastic vent frame that I now fear is under stress and may break or pop out) but none of these are insoluble. It just takes people like us to point them out and give feedback. |
