cross drilled or slotted rotors...

So I'm a bit confused and hoping y'all can help me out here. I have a 228i M-Sport without the big brake upgrade so I'm wondering which rotors/pads I have in my car. There are so many variations that I'm confused and don't want to order the wrong parts. From my understanding--and correct me if I'm wrong--the 228i M-Sport shares the same rotors/pads as the M235i, correct? If so, what options for aftermarket cross drilled and/or slotted rotors are out there for my car? And any links to the exact products would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The 228i uses a 312mm rotor front and rear. The M235i has a 340mm front and 345mm rear rotor to match the brembos.

drilled/slotted rotors dont have any advantages for daily use other than looks . Go with a quality blank rotor, zimmerman still makes theirs in Germany and they're excellent.

"without the brake upgrade" is confusing - do you mean you have the base single-piston brakes or the blue Brembo's? (there is also a special big-brake kit w/ the dimpled rotors and the various colors that is often called a BBK or similar)? I think that if your 228 has the blue Brembo brakes, then it will also have the 340/345 rotors - I'm told they are identical between 228 and 235, but stock on 235 and part of the M-sport option on 228 (or perhaps another option package?). Apparently this is confusing for the manufacturers as well, so best to send them your vin to verify.

No Bremo's here. It is the M-Sport but doesn't have the brake upgrade so that's where I get confused. Does that mean it's the standard 228i brakes or did the M-Sport come with something different? And if I wanted to upgrade to the 235i blue Brembo's, is it a plug and play deal?

So the 228i M-Sport non-Brembo would be 312mm?

Option 1. Without the M-Sport package is 312x24 front, 300x20 rear
Option 2. With the M-Sport package but without M-Sport brakes is 330x24 front, 300x20 rear (up to 07/2014)
Option 3. M-Sport brakes is 340x30 front, 345x24 rear

It sounds like you are option 1 if your car was built after 07/2014 or option 2 if built before then:

Thanks! This is exactly what I was trying to figure out. Much appreciated

My car was 6/14 so it looks like I have the 330x24 and 300x20.

I'm starting to look into this more seriously; there is a good thread on here someplace discussing the swap. I think it takes rotors, backing plates, and calipers; plus some software recoding. I'm going to see if the dealership will give me a break on it rather than replace my stock rotors under warranty. The REAL big brake kit probably requires 18" wheels so I'd rather not go that route.

I just had my front rotors and pads replaced yesterday under the maintenance program. I will be out of warranty and the maintenance coverage in a couple of weeks so I'd like to eventually upgrade to the Brembo's when my rears are due if I could find a set for a decent amount.

post your vin or post what packages the car has by looking up your vin online.

Everyone is just guessing at what you have so you will never have an answer.

You probably have the 228 with Msport brakes which are blue with a M logo (made by brembo). The Mperformance BBK is a completely seperate kit altogether.

The Msport brakes also have a Mperformance Rotor upgrade which is larger than stock but not the Mperformance BBK kit.

I have the M-Sport package but no blue brakes. That's what is confusing because i think the M-Sport non-Brembo's have upgraded brakes from the the standard 228i non-Msport, sort of a middle ground brake set-up but I could be wrong. I'm getting conflicting info on my searches.

Just take a ruler and measure the rotor diameter to see if they are the "middle ground" 330x24mm non M-Sport brakes with the single piston sliding caliper that came with the M-Sport package up to 07/2014. Alternatively go to the dealer and have them look up your brake part numbers by VIN number, Real OEM and other sites may give you the correct info if you know all your build options, but the dealer should be definitive.

Ifr you're looking to upgrade to big brakes this kit is a real bargain. You'll need to check and see if it fits your car and wheels:

I already have the Blue Brembos on my M235i so I upgraded to this 2-piece kit. I just installed them today and, so far, I'm very happy with the Hawk HPS 5 pads.
