Help... bigger tyres to put POWER down

Hi all

I have 235 spec with downpipe, racechip , MPE exhuast , 255 semi slick at the back

This machine is running around 285kw and around 560nm - these are great figures BUT but grip is such a major issue which is very frustrating .

Now to get the power under control I obviously need to put bigger tyres, 265's or or is wider possible on this car??? - which I think v unlikely

Anyone know how do you get these to fit properly without no issues... and will the standard rims fit 265's?

Thanks

You need the LSD. It makes a massive difference in straight line and turning traction. I use to think my M235 6MT had major traction issues with the stock 245 width MPSS tires for 2 years. I added the LSD a few months back and there's a monumental difference in traction. Sure, it still spins the tires sometimes, but it's not remotely as bad, it's far more controllable, and there's a ton more forward momentum with the spin.

You can add wider tires (might be able to squeeze 265s in the back) but it will require wider rims and then you'll need to screw around with camber to make sure they don't rub. The stock rims can only safely handle 245s. The 255s you're running aren't designed for an 8" wide rim. You need at least an 8.5" rim for a 255 and a 9" rim for a 265.

I'm running fbo and mhd stg2 with 255 Ps4s on the rear and grip seems to only be an issue briefly taking off and really not a problem. I came from 265 semis on the rear and the ps4s are better in my opinion. I don't understand how grip could be that big of an issue unless ur current tyres are really bad...

I'm FBO with BM3, the LSD is a necessity at this power level. I just got it installed today and the difference is noticeable even without giving it any real jam. I have another 700km to go before I can really hit it, but even now at moderate acceleration and deceleration it feels better.

The skinny standard rims safely handle only 245's max in the back. 265's on 9-9.5" wheels are your best bet. "Real Estate" is really limited on this car for big wheels/tires.

Sounds like LSD is best option forward!

Now can this only be bought new and installed by BMW ?

If so doesn't the cost really outweighs the benefit .....

Yeah I dont really have issues at all on 235 rs-4s . I'm fbo + meth running 20+ psi.

Also fyi a wider tire helps more with lateral grip, not straight line grip..... Unless you are running a wider tire at lower pressure specifically for a drag strip.

Think of wider tires as changing the shape of your contact patch, not the size.

You will benefit much more from a stickier tire, not a wider one.

I bought one from ECS tuning for 2/3 the cost of the dealer and had BMW install it for book time plus a bit since I'm off warranty. Saved myself about $2,000 finding it myself. I'm sure there's a place in Europe that offers them for a reasonable $2,200 USD like I paid.

There is also a Quaife and Wavetrac diff option.

If not installed at the dealership it will have to be installed at a shop that targets BMW as there are fairly unique specialty tools required. That's my understanding at least.

I would imagine there might be a little bit of coding to be done but someone who has done it would have to verify.

I wouldnt really consider other options except for the BMW one as I'm under Motorplan for another 2 years

And by the time it's expired I may as well sell and get a used M2 ...lol

This might sound crazy but I'm thinking of removing the downpipe to get the power under control.

Sure it won't sound nearly as good or loud and the loud crackle and pops will be largely muted , but it is either this or a lsd install , either way this beast needs something done ...lol

I think I'll regret it though... But I can always put it back

What tires are you running? Given that you're in the UK where the temps are mild to cool and it rains a lot, any performance tire will be lacking in traction most of the time. Good "summer" tires are key to grip, but they only perform within a narrow band of temp (~70 degrees to 90 degrees). Anything above or below that and they go to crap. If I lived in the UK and my M235 was my daily, I'd probably running Continental DWS06 vs a summer tire (best one out there is the Michelin Pilot 4S) plus the LSD.

If it were me, I would save my money for the LSD. It is by far my most favorite mod. You can really feel it working and you really can steer with the throttle. The car feels very different with it and it will substantially reduce your traction issues.

I have Yokohama Advan Neova AD08 , they
work well but only when they warmed up

LSD is defin the way to go, but not worth the $$$ , rather put those $ into an upgrade on another car

What shipping option did you go with to Canada? Did you pay duty ahead of time or get hit after you received it?

ECS ships ground Fedex, I opted to have it shipped to family in Michigan. There shouldn't be duty anymore with CETA.

My car is FBO, BM3 Stage 2, etc etc. Car traps 114mph on a 90degree ambient day.

On the stock 20k mile (car is a 2014) factory PSS, the car would spin 2nd gear all over town. Tires were not worn out by any stretch, they were still above the wear bars.

Went to a 255 PS4S in 19" in the rear, and the difference is staggering. The car not only rides WAY better, quieter, smoother, but the car barely spins first gear. Car feels faster too because of the increase in traction which is a huge plus.

I agree! I barely get any spin as fbo on the ps4s good tyre setup is going to be cheaper for days over the lsd.
