NJ Turnpike Pothole - Collapsed Strut & possible axle

It took me out...

At first glance seems to be a collapsed strut, possible broken axle. Seems to happen often on 3/4 series they told me. This was news to me.

It was right before exit 68, middle lane... pothole on the line of the lane. i hit that thing like a ton as I switched into the middle. I thought the tire fell off.

No damage to re71r, or Apex EC7 at first glance. Held air, no apparent bubbles, no cracks or bends to be seen in rim. TBD...

But geez, cars suspension is destroyed but these wheels are fine. Must be the G-Teq coating i put on them this weekend...

But in all seriousness, car is in Park Ave BMW in NJ.

I will update this thread as I hear more.

I’ve been using WAZE to help confront potholes and road debris. Even the slimmest chance of a heads-up is worth it.

For the wheel and tire to transmit that kind of impact into the strut or links and not sustain damage.

I share your pain - I bent two 18x8.5 Apex EC-7's (front) and blew the sidewall of a 225/40 Continental DWS here in DC this season.

Dodging potholes has become a regular thing for me now. I never take new roads to work - if the traffic is awful, I sit through it because it's better than taking the risk. Often I wonder if I am focusing too much on potholes and compromising my safety and those around me...

Now that I think about it, the pothole patches, which are just patches on previous patches, are sometimes worse than the pothole itself.

Maybe I'll run for office and base my campaign solely on improving infrastructure with a heavy emphasis on road quality? "Let's make America's roads great again"... that worked bigly for someone I know.

update:

wheel barrel is bent up pretty bad.
strut looks like a V.

Trying to get both front struts and springs replaced as a pair, also the left front wheel hub/bearing and a new Apex wheel.

I got pretty mangled by a couple potholes on 684 and 84 in Ny and Ct this weekend. Some of them were part of the bridge cement/expansion joint. Terrible.

With a hit like that, I might try to find a collision shop to do a quick check that frame wasn't knocked out of alignment (more for the decision about buyout vs. turning it in - if they were able to get it aligned OK it should drive fine for the short term). Might even be able to DIY if you know the reference points and have access to a 4-point lift - probably only need to check the front for square, but the last car I did this with was a '71 Zcar and it may have gotten a bit more complicated.

was done the day i picked up the car.

I did a lease extension for 2 more months... Gives more time to think and bring the overall buyout cost down.

Really on fence with, do I just buy a m2 comp, wait for m2 CSL, or Widebody, cage, seat, CF hood/trunk my 235.

Truly a first-world dilemma for sure - specific customization vs. the convenience and factory engineered fit of a factory special. I'll look forward to seeing which way you go with it.

Based on what happened to M2 pricing at release, I expect that M2 COMPs will carry a hefty dealer markup. I remember M2's going for $20k over asking and prices still havent settled all that much... in fact jalopnik wrote an article some time ago about an M2 carrying a price tag of $85k... and it sold. Looks like new M2's are mostly around $62k atm.

Regarding the M2 CSL, I imagine getting one of the 2021 allocations would be extremely difficult, if not impossible... and if the M4 GTS is anything to go by, it will be useless on the street.

If you're looking for a change, I would go for a CPO M2. The mod bug will still bite, however.

Personally, I have dreams of installing the M235iR widebody kit. I've seen one of Turner's M235iRs and they are absolutely stunning and even though $10+k is a lot, it's kind of a good deal when you consider it's all BMW, not to mention it INCLUDES FENDER LINERS.

I was shipped the key to the m4 gts when released in hopes of me purchasing one. Allocation isnt an issue, its dealer mark up as mentioned and who is crazy enough to pay that premium to have the car first.
