Exhaust mods for the M240 on budget

I’m trying to modify my exhaust ton my 240i but I have quickly realized that a lot of these exhaust systems are very expensive. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a exhaust, mid pipe, muffler, or muffler bypass. I would like to spend under $600.

You get what you pay for.

Save up your money and buy a used/new M Performance muffler. Period. It fits like stock, won't rust out, and has an aggressive warble and almost exotic sound.

Second option would be to get a high quality ($1200) catted DP. That will give a similar sound to the M Performance muffler.

Midpipes created rasp and weird noises at certain rpms.

Muffler deletes cause rasp, drone, boomy, and and weird noises at certain rpms and can be quite loud.

Dinan midpipe is about $550. There's tons you videos on Youtube of people with the stock cat and muffler with the Dinan midpipe. Sounds pretty good IMO.

You can:

Free - remove the plug from the exhaust valve and then zip tie it somewhere it won’t get hurt. That leaves the valve open all the time and the exhaust will be as loud as it is on startup. [Edit - read Xutv’s post, below, for corrections to this]

Cheap - go to a muffler shop and have them cut out the resonators from your mid pipe and have them replace the sections with straight pipe.

$$ - If possible, accumulate more money and do what the others have suggested.

Get a 200 cell high flow downpipe and resonator delete. I have it on a 235i and sounds great, I have some sound clips I posted on the forum in an earlier thread.

If you sell your current downpipe the cost should be within your budget.

Since you're in Charleston, another option is to go to Total MINI & BMW Services at 3320 Biedler Street in North Charleston - http://www.totalminibmw.com/ 843-552-5550. I have no affiliation with the shop. I found it on BIMRS.ORG, a reliable source for high-quality BMW independent shops. Tell them what you want, and see what they have to say. Then go away and think about it.

Not all that long ago, qualified shops would build exhaust systems (i.e., exhaust headers back) for quite a bit less than what was on offer from specialists like Dinan. That's not to knock Dinan (I've been doing business with them since 1986), or any of the other exhaust system suppliers. It's just that there may still be less expensive ways to go while still getting a satisfactory result. Total MINI & BMW should be able to help you sort through it.

I don't know that our cars are so special that any of that has changed.

The reason the car is loud on cold start-up is because the wastegate is wide open to allow for a quick catalytic converter light off. Once the wastegate closes, the exhaust is notably quieter. The exhaust valve makes a very minor change in exhaust noise/volume.

+1 on high flow (or catless) downpipe for completely upgrading the sound note. VRSF, CTS, others all within budget.
