Bare wiring in engine bay

Changing my spark plugs today and noticed bare wiring with the insulation gone on one of the ignition coils, should I wrap it in something (electrical tape etc?) also wonder how this happened

I'm just guessing but doesn't copper wire corrode if not insulated. Thats why exposed ground wires need to be cleaned and why grounds are often a sore spot.

Would the corroded wires add resistance ?

And is there a better way to repair the insulation than using tape ?

Rodents. White wires show chew marks. Replace and get repellant. Ongoing problem with European autos.

I had rodent chewing my insulation under the plastic engine cover in a few localized areas. However my insulation didn't get worn to bare metal.

What I did do is wrap my wires in automobile aluminized Velcro closure wrapping tube and hose protection. I think the rodents get freaked out by the aluminized coating and haven't had any more issues.

Put electrical tape around all exposed wire as a temporary fix. I think I'll order this to permanently seal them. Thanks!

Rodents can do a lot of damage

My late father's car was written off by squirrels. They did not just chew the insulation, they chewed right through the copper, and a good bit of hard plastic as well.

When I was in high school, I showed up one morning for work to find the strip mall had no power. I went out back and opened up the loading dock door to let some light in and found a charred squirrel clamped down on the feeder to the transformer beside the dock. Those critters aren't the brightest bulbs out there. (Well, that one squirrel might have been pretty bright for a few seconds when it hit copper and flashed itself, but...)

And to the OP, yep, rodent damage. They love the environmental friendly soy based insulation manufacturers use now.

What did you eventually do for this? I saw today my wires are almost exactly like yours. Strange. Only the ground and white wire. Did you use the tape or the brush on? And What are the little things the white and striped wire go into? I also can't figure out where the harness connects and what the part number is for a replacement.

Here are my pictures. Uncanny right?

Just saw this sorry, I used electrical tape as temporary fix and have yet to change it out for a permanent fix. I've monitored the area and haven't seen anymore chewing or signs of mice thank goodness. Guess someone's doing their job 😼

I am fairly sure this happened when my car was parked for two weeks at a friends. I have the liquid tape for the white wires and can easily remove the brown grounds to better fix them.

And those little pieces the white wires go into to I still can't identify. But I sill can't find the part number of the harness to see if I can do a replacement.

There are a bunch of ferrel cats that patrol my "hood". So we are both good there. Yours looks like they are "watching".

My wife's car, yes (twice), and I've seen nests in my car but have yet to have any damage. The longest either car sits is <30hrs (unless we're on vacation, but the rodent damage / nesting has occurred when we've been home and driving). It doesn't take those little f'er's long.

Love it! Tell him/her to keep up the good work, and leave out an extra treat or two!

What a great-looking ball of fur!

We had our own miniature black jaguar up in New Hampshire (see below; no shots of him on the car or the truck, both of which he liked getting up on so he could better observe his immediate territory). Mice and voles were beneath him; he left those to the smaller cats like the one sitting below him in the photo.

At the time, we had two largish male cats who ruled over 3 acres and were smart enough to survive for 15 years in an environment containing an array of very capable nighttime predators. We also had two smaller female cats specializing in smaller prey. The smaller cat in the photo was into mice and voles (yay!). The other, while extremely charming as a pet, was into hummingbirds. I think that's all the other cats left for her – like dogs, those cats' pecking order was very clear.

I don't doubt, however, that if the smaller cats weren't eating the smaller rodents, the Miniature Black Jaguar (his nickname) would have consumed them, too. As it was, almost every morning between March and December when we brought his food out, the hearts and gall bladders(?) of one to three chipmunks were on the floor of the breezeway.

Our cats were all working cats with unfettered access to a heated kennel. As owners determined to protect a rural home, its immediate environs and its gardens, the cats were a necessity. They were remarkably effective and having them as (outdoor) pets was an added bonus.

If rodents are your problem, cats are the bee's knees.

Not our local cats that sleep on our vert roof. I use "Rodent Defense" spray every 6 months. No more problems.

Unfortunately, not all cats are willing to work. There's an old saying: "Dogs have masters; cats have staff".
