Oil Purchase / VIN
I recently went to my local BMW Dealership and purchased Oil and Filter as I was going to perform the oil change myself. The parts man went to my car and documented my VIN before selling the parts to me. Why did he do this?

To make sure you got the correct parts.

Id be willing to bet its to document that the oil change wasnt done by them and if he/she comes back in with a issue they can blame it on the OP. Years ago our local Subaru dealer would go to the local auto cross track and take vin numbers of cars that where being auto crossed. When the owner brought the car in for service work they found their warranties had been voided
