Alignment for track
What’s the recommended alignment for track? How much camber is possible without camber plates?
The car is a 230i with THP. I just got square oem wheels with Cup 2 connect 240 |

M3 LCA’s will get you some negative camber but will also bring the top of the inside of the tires closer to the strut. Camber plates, on the other hand, move the entire mechanism (strut and tire) to a negative position while keeping the distance from tire to strut the same as stock, making for easier tire fitments in the 245 and 255 section widths up front. At least this is my understanding from researching this a couple years ago.

I think I've read you can only get -1.2 camber in the front with the stock strut mounts.

You’ll need a set of camber plates at the very least if you’re going outside of stock parameters. Until you get those there’s not much point going outside of stock. Aside from a bit of extra outside shoulder wear, the car was still fun to autocross. I guess you could adjust the front toe to zero if you are already at the shop.
Stock you get 0.5 deg of camber up front and that’s it. Camber 2.5F/2.1-2.2R (maxed out on both) (Heard ideal is over 3deg for a pure track car) Toe 0F/ -0.17degR Note this is for my 2015 M235i, but my guess is that it would be similar. Except you have the bonus of a light front end so any camber will get you further 😁 Unfortunately I haven’t seen a sticky thread on this with definitive numbers as all setups have slightly different compromises. What’s a good setup for street is not a good setup for the track. I’m stock shocks, springs and bars w/staggered performance tire/wheel package aside from Vorshlag camber plates. I actually run like 2.3deg of front camber as a compromise on street driving tire wear. I compiled a whole list of posts and settled on my settings, I’m also street/autocrossing focus. Still I’m not running 0 toe in the rear like I do on my S2000 for turn-in, but I also didn’t want to be surprised on the street when caught out in the rain with a slidey car when the 2 series stock is pretty safe stock with its handling but still has the rwd rotation. The important thing is getting camber up front. Next time I’ll probably just bite the bullet and go for the 2.5deg of camber and when I need new lower arms I’ll go M3 or aftermarket to get more camber even if that limits me to 245 square rather than 255. The M3 arms give you an extra degree or so of camber taking the stock 0.5 to 1.5deg baseline Last edited by rhop101; 08-03-2022 at 02:50 PM.. |

-2.6 front with vorshlag camber plates not maxed out on kw coilovers I believe I could get -3.0 to -3.2
Idea for track is closer to 3.5 degrees I had excessive outer tire wear with stock -0.5 degrees Vorshlag are excellent cost is similar to M3 LCA and thrust arm install and you can get more camber adjustment |
