after driving manual trans' for 30 yrs..perfromance cars, i love my 8 speed auto m235i..i would suggest if you continue to experience your shifting issues..maybe go with a friend who has an manual or even a auto 235i and drive it..
good luck and chalk it all up to life experiences

Stick with it and you’ll get it. Takes some practice if you are a new to driving a manual, then it will be like riding a bike!

Congrats! I turn 40 tomorrow and i've never owned a car with fewer than 3 pedals, but i'm sure i've stalled my car at some point in the last couple of years. It happens.
I'd second people telling you to practice starts without using any gas pedal. The car should add gas by its self if it feels the RPM's dropping too low. Even on hills i'll sometimes take off with no gas and i'm always surprised by how well the car handles it. Enjoy the car! That thing is really cool, just a simple RWD manual coupe with a little bit of power. Every day I get a little bit better at driving with a manual, even though i'm a (relatively) old man who's been doing it forever. That's part of the fun and i'm happy you're out there appreciating it. By the time we die, we will have spent a huge portion of our lives piloting vehicles from place to place. I'm sure if you added it up, it would amount to years of our lives. That time can either be spent in abject monotony or it can be spent playing with something entertaining. Either way, you'll never get that time back. Might as well enjoy it! |

When you get comfortable with it, I hope you love driving a manual as much as I do.
I just spent weeks looking for my next manual bmw (my fourth)...found it yesterday. Those with an auto will say they're faster (and now they are), but you have complete control, in a simpler, more reliable trans. (The clutch in my '99 e46 was original and lasted the 386k miles my car had.) Make your shifts smooth...work on revmatching and your clutch will last longer.

Glad you're bonding to your new partner! I can tell you that, 8 years later, the connection only grows!
