Michelin PS AS4 vs. PS4S

Hi All,

Was running PS4S (staggered) on my RWD 228i, loved everything about them except for the tread-life of the rear tires. Barely got 30k miles and they were at 2/32" and ready to replace. Fronts are still in very good shape.

Went with PS All Season 4 in the rear (245/35R18) hoping I would get 90% of the performance and twice the life.

Cannot speak to the life of them, and will never be able to because they are going back for PS4S replacements immediately.

They are not in the same league as the summer tire as far as turning/cornering performance. Grip is ok, but they feel like the rear of the car rotates way more in turns instead of being freight train planted like the PS4S (hard to explain, feels weird, but they aren't actually sliding), feel very squishy in quick lateral switches, and are a little easier to break loose under hard acceleration out of corners. Straight-line braking and acceleration grip does feel just about as good though. They feel identical just cruising on the highway. I'm sure they're good in the rain, but won't have rain in SoCal for a while so no idea.

Would love anyone else's opinion who has tried these two sets on their F22. I'll bet I would have been much more impressed with them if I had switched directly from run-flats instead of PS4S.

Two totally, totally different tires. One comes on standard jap SUVS as a factory tire. One is literally one of the best performance tires on the market. There is no comparison other than "different leagues" like you said. PS4S sidewall is meant to drive a sports car while the AS is meant to cushion all the feeling and response out of a commuter car.

Also I'd like to add that 30k on a rear set of PS4S is impressive. I get maybe 12k on my rear conti extremcontact sports which are highly comparable to the PS4S off track. On track both tires will melt away.

Yeah, I was just very surprised, thought it would be a lot closer. The PS AS4 is an optional OE fit on the new C8 Corvette! I guess it'll do if you gotta take your 'Vette skiing or something.

Also, regarding getting 30k miles on them, I don't track it at all. Work in Malibu, mostly freeway, and occasionally take very spirited drives through random canyons on the way home, so I don't beat them too, too bad.

That's wild, but me too! Lot of freeway with the occasional mountain road rip. No sliding around or track at all. But I'm also on an n55 heavily tuned on ethanol so.. lot more power.

The vettes have them as an option because so many mid life crisis fudds want something to look at, not actually drive!

I cannot imagine driving this car the way I do on the Pirelli 225 square all season run-flat setup factory option, because I'm 110% sure that these Michelin 245 PS AS4 go-flats are way, way better than those, and they suck compared to the PS4S.

My car came with Bridgestone S001 summer run-flats, even those were better than the PS AS4's. Upgrade to Michelin PS4S was noticeable, but not huge. And the PS4S go-flats were cheaper at the time.

Anyone run both PSS vs. PS4S? I've heard in some forums that some people like the old tire better than the new one.

The N55 will do that to rear tires! Love/hate relationship, LMAO! I do dig the balance of the 228i, yet miss the power from a 6-pot. The N20 has more "poke" than anyone really needs on public streets though, and handling is sublime. It'll do for a long distance commuter car.

I had been running AS Ps4's on my M240i for the past year, about 4000 miles. Just switched to the summer Ps4's going to 235's in front, 265's in back, but it hasn't been warm enough in MN to test and see what the differences are. The spring weather here in MN has been absolutely stupid and I hate it so much.....what i can say is that they look cooler but perform worse because of the cold. I'm sure they will be amazing once we get over 60 degrees here.

I've run them both, and both have worked well for me. My car came with the PSS tires.

One thing to be aware of is that the PSS is a BMW-spec tire (i.e., it's got the Star BMW designation on the tire's sidewall, showing that (the tread compound and tread pattern? (I'm not really sure how far it goes)) have been formulated to BMW's specification). The Michelin PS4S tires are, AFAIK, a generic version of the tire.

I use the A/S 3+ from November to April and the PS4S from May to October. With the all-season tire I run 225 front / 245 rear and with the summer tire I run 255 square. My experience is that it's not useful to compare the two with one another due to their compound and tread design differences. At least that seems to be the case here in the Midwest, where temperatures can vary so much during the year.

The all-season tire does like to get loose during moderate throttle application in a seemingly-nothing turn when the temps are below 40° F. I experienced this effect a couple of months ago and thought "Huh...who knew." Then I thought "Isn't DSC kinda neat!?!"

No kidding, right – a car that can save you from yourself when you're just driving it to wherever is certainly a nice safety feature. Of course, having beaucoup torque from barely off-throttle isn't always a car's best feature. I always remember to pay close attention while driving this car.

Swapped out the rear PS AS4's for PS4S's and all is right again, car feels planted. Just had to pay the mounting fee again and the price difference, no idea what the tire shop is going to do with the tires I used for a couple of days.

It was a terrible idea to mix all-season's in the rear with summer's in the front, the feel was thrown off when driving briskly. Should have just went with one or the other all the way around, lesson learned.

I have used the AS/3, AS/3+ and now AS/4 tires and have had very good experiences with them on several sporty cars. I suspect the primary issue was mixing tires as you mentioned in your last post. AS/4s are not nearly as good as a summer tire in warm weather but they are still great tires for their purpose and in my experience by far the best all season performance tire available.

Yup, 100% sure it was just mixing different types front to rear. We have AS/3+ on my wife's Subaru and they are great.

I run both tires on my M235 6MT with the MP LSD and Stage 2 mods. I find the PSAS4 to be exceptional in 30 to 60 temps. They also have great slush and light snow traction. They're quiet and ride and wear well too. The PS4S tires on the otherhand stick much better in 60+ degree temps. Short of near race spec street tires, these are the best summer performance tires out there.

If I didn't want all out grip, I think the PSAS4 is a great all around performance tire. I am considering doing just that if when I get my second fun car which will be on super grippy rubber. I'm lucky to get 20ķ out of a set of PS4S tires.
