228i Brake upgrade option
I have a 2014 228i Dinan stage 4 with m-sport package without the m-sport brakes. Just have the P337 option which is 1 piston and 330x24 rotors. Currently I get a little brake fade from doing long period spirited driving and was wondering if I should get M-performance brakes or should I just upgrade rotors and pads?

If that's not enough, add a racing brake fluid like Motul into the mix. If you use a race fluid like one of the Motuls, you'll probably need to change it more frequently than you would the OEM fluid. If that's still not enough, the M Performance BBK would likely do the trick. If you're considering this option, you may want to act sooner rather than later. Apparently, it's a possibility that the kit will be discontinued; more here: https://www.bimmerworld.com/BMW-M-Pe...t-F22-F3X.html.

I'm very happy with the OEM S2NHA 340mm/4-piston Brembo package. If you're just doing spirited backroads, Dradernh has the right idea...pads, fluid, and lines will go a very long way for not a lot of money. Even the JDC-Miller 228i Pirelli Challenge "Street Tuner" class cars were running P337's to avoid power/weight penalties for upgrading the brakes above the base trim level specifications. That said, I doubt you'd be subject to any similar restrictions on a streetcar, so if the cost makes sense, go for it. The S2NHA's are proven.

I just installed the front half of the M Performance brakes on my 230i yesterday. Not going to test it until I get the rears installed and the car updated but I like the way it looks.

Wait, why no blue option? These the same as the big blue brakes that come standard on the performance package cars? I like these other color options.

Correct - although I wish the M perf kit had a blue option - I prefer to be less noticeable.

got rear rotors on and software updated but didn't have time to play around this afternoon. I bought the plain rotors that are on the blue brakes instead of the dimpled and slotted for the rear but I still think it looks nice. I'll post a brief review later this weekend.

so I placed an order for new pads/rotors. I decided to with StopTech pads, unfortunately the rear pads are on back order and the sales rep said I can use the 308.16130 instead of the 309.16130 since I am doing street driving only. Is it okay to have 309 in front and 308 on the rear?

I don't have the technical data to back it up (though StopTech would) but I suspect the only difference between the pads is the material, which would have different friction vs temperature curves. So as long as you aren't working the brakes very hard (e.g. on track) and getting them hot enough for the rears to get outside their optimal operating range, you shouldn't feel a difference and it'll be fine.
If you do manage to get the rears outside their optimal temp range, I'd expect braking distances to increase...but that's expected and would happen with the stock pads too. These seem to be better than the stock pads anyway, so you're ahead regardless. |

question. Is there a caliper mounting bracket for the new calipers or do they just slide onto the rotor?

For the M Perf. Brakes no bracket is needed, it uses the same mounting points on the hub carrier.

The rear discs you linked are for some F3X series cars that come with a larger rear hub/parking brake (185mm) assembly. I had to install https://www.bmwpartsdirect.com/oem-p...sc-34206797598. I believe all F2X cars have the same rear hub/parking brake size (160mm) and need to use the rear rotors with the smaller hub.

I am so happy I got the M Performance brakes. They look great and perform flawlessly in spirited driving. You have to get them coded after installation because brake force distribution changes with the significantly larger front rotors and larger pistons.
The rear splash shield is NOT compatible with the m performance brakes. I let my dealership install the rears for that reason. Removing the old and installing the new splash shield looked like a pain. Purchase the rotors direct from Brembo for much less than BMW charges. You can get the dimpled slotted or the plain rotors like I did. They come with the aluminum hats which are a must in my opinion. If you search my posts you can find information on the part number and the web site to order rotors from. |
