so went ahead and bought the M performance steering wheel for my M235i.
black alcantara with White cross Stitch with red leather 12 o'clock marker. open pore carbon fibre insert with ///M logo at the bottom.
got this for a good price doing a deal off eBay to pay direct to the dealership who was selling.
I thought the race display version was a bit too expensive really and too much hassle to fit my self.

I had done this wheel swap previously on my 5 series so this time took 30 mins and no swearing.

you need a size 20 torx driver, flat head screwdriver and a some thing to remove the main securing bolt ( can't remember the size or name of the tool )

step 1
remove negative of the battery in the boot.

step 2
removed the airbag
you need to insert the flat head screwdriver into either side of the wheel where the access hole is. you need to push in to release the springs that hold the air bag in.

with air bag popped out remove the cable

Step 3
undo the two screws holding the trim to the wheel, then there is a single screw at the bottom at the back behind where the ///M is at the base.

step 4

remove the multi function controls. There is a single screw for each side you access from the rear of the wheel. Un clip all the cabling and dont forget to remove the screw that is earthing the controls to the wheel.

Step 5

undo the main securing bolt and pull off the wheel - the plastic back will come off as well.

if you have the vibration module or wheel heating you'll have extra cabling / modules to remove.

step 6
install in reverse order.

I have spent 1hr on those two springs with a flat head screwdriver.

Was the screwdriver too thin? Is it hard for you to pop out the airbag?

did you manage?

look at the pictures with the air bag removed and you see each spring on either side of the main bolt in the centre. it is very tricky to find to press to release, but do one side and unclip the air bag, then do the other.

I'm guessing you already got this done but for those who are going to do this in the future I found that the spring kept slipping off the screwdriver, I used a allen key slightly smaller than the hole and removed the airbag in 30 sec.

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for putting the instructions up. I just replaced my wheel using them and all went well. My wheel was heated and had the vibration piece in so there was a lot more gubbins to move over but other than that was all the same.

The big nut that holds the wheel on needs a 16mm socket to remove, if you wanted to update your original instructions.

was removing vibration piece hard? Also - how does heated steering wheel differs from non? I'll be doing my swap in the foreseeable future (heated steering wheel for alcantara non heated) and I'm interested in hearing what's the difference between them - are there more cable connecter or?

Yeah I used a hex screwdriver much more meat to push the spring with. That said still not a fun job. Regular wheel is even worse did the one on our F31 that was a nightmare.

Hi

It wasn't that hard, the vibration motor just sits in a molded foam piece that easily transferred into the same space on the new wheel. There was a connector to the heated part, which I just left with nothing connected when the new wheel was put on. I got no error codes or anything, even when I push the heated wheel button, no errors, just nothing happens obviously...

Dude thank you sooooo much. I literally was here trying to remove the airbag for about 2:15 and well with the Allen key you saved my life lol I did it in about 3 minutes, thanks again.

One piece of advice, wrap something like a rag in your trunk latch ao you dont accidentally close it with the power disconnected.
If you do this you will have to pop the hood and run some power to the cars jump terminals in the engine bay in order to get the trunk open again to get at the battery.

it was the OEM BMW m performance wheel for the 2 series.
