Cool 235/40 vs 245/40 vs 255/35

Hey all,

I've tracked my M240 3-4 times now on 245/35 Conti ExtremeContacts but it's about time to let them go and I'm interested in moving to 200tw's. Car is a weekend/fun car so not really concerned about rain/cold/whatever. Nothing is available in 245/35 however.

Setup: 8.5" +45 square wheels with a 5mm spacer in front, ST XA coilovers, Millway camber plates and currently aligned to -2.5F/-2R.

Leaning toward 235/40 RT660 right now since they're no skinnier than my 245/35s that are on the car right now, and 235 seems a bitter fit to an 8.5" wheel than a 255/35, etc...

All 3 sizes are within $20/tire of each other.

What say you, autox/track dudes? (And no, not in the mood to buy a set of 17x9 +42s with 255/40-17s although that's probably the best answer.)

Conti 245/35 as a comparison point
Zero rubbing, ever
Sec width 9.8"
Tread width 8.6"
Diameter 24.8"

Falken RT660 235/40
9.6"
8.7"
25.4"

Hankook RS4 245/50 (Falken out of stock)

10.1"
9.9"
25.6"

Falken RT660 255/35
10.4"
9.3"
25"

I have no experience with the tires you've listed, so I can't comment on them in that regard.

Of the three, I'd choose the Falken RT660 235/40. I wouldn't put a 255 tire on an 8½" wheel.

245/40 RS4’s are on sale. I run 245/40 RS4’s on 17x8 wheels with no issues. Obviously there will be a slight gearing disadvantage running these at 18” but your offsets and camber should definitely allow for fitment.

You will not be disappointed with how those Hankooks perform, if you go that route. They grip like crazy, and they’re extremely durable. Used in endurance racing for a reason. I’ve driven them in pouring rain on track and experienced occasional traction loss but it was always controlled and minimal and while pushing. On public roads when not going crazy, they’re completely acceptable in the rain imo. Keep in mind I don’t have nearly the same amount of torque in my 228i so your experience may be different. They’re also a pretty loud tire. Not too too bad, I get used to it very quickly, but definitely noticeable when switching over from my All Seasons.

I originally was on Conti extreme’s before getting the RS4’s for track duty. It completely changes the steering responsiveness and feedback through the wheel.

Conti is bringing out their newer than new 200 ("ExttremeContactForce") over this summer; they show 245/35 and 245/40 on the 'wish list' but not sure when they will arrive. And as noted above, don't go more than 245 on 8.5 wide wheel (although you can get away with it, you won't be getting the handling you were after).

I just ordered a set of the Conti ExtremeContact Force for my car and they should arrive this week. 245/35/18's that I plan to run on the Bimmerworld 18x8.5 (38 offset) TA5R wheels. I've been a long time (Mod-car) autocrosser and the 228i has been my daily driver but I've just started tracking it a little over the past year. Running M-sport package with the stagger wheels (225/245 Conti ECS) on stock alignment.
I just installed camber plates and am running -2.5/-2.0 camber.
I did end up killing those stock sized ECS's this past weekend. So getting excited to try out the new Wheel/tire combo.

I have 255 square. Falken 660? The cost to get there is prohibitive. Not sure it was worth it.

You need camber plates, 18x9 wheels. I also did Bilstein B14's with the EDC coded out. All good if you make more money than me!

Car now has great grip on turn in, at the expense of the steering being twitchy on straight roads. I can really feel the grooves in the road.

Anytime you make track modifications on a street car = compromise.
