Pulley Movement

Hey,

I was hoping someone could help put me at ease. I had a look under my bonnet on my M235i and noticed the pulley on the attached pic rattles and moves Is this normal? I think this is the fan or timing belt?

I've heard a slight metallic rattle coming from the car recently when idling and it could be a normal noise but thought id ask after noticing this.

Cheers

Sorry mate, just checked on my M235 & nothing is loose or rattles at idle. Purchased last April.

Personally, I would take it back to dealer to have it checked soon. Pulleys ought not be loose.

This looks like the tensioner pulley that keeps the belt tight. It will move overtime as the belt gets worn and ages but not noticeable. If this is rattling and moving around definitely take your car in otherwise there is a possibility of damage to other components under the hood.

Also, on my last BMW the dealer said that this part wore out before the belt and had a slight bend and the belt was slowly walking off the pulley.

I have the same metallic grinding sound. I hear it from inside but only when the fan is on. Maybe it is the belt/pulley. Can you here yours inside the car (stereo off)?

its mostly when im outside the car I hear the rattle. Im not even sure the 2 are linked.

I heard a noise sitting in the car last week that i hadn't heard before so i turned the fan off and it was still there, it was very quiet so i just put it down to the engine being cold. Im probably finding non existing problems but ill post what BMW say. Theres probably nothing wrong
