Throttle Body Needs To Be Replaced

Wondering if anyone else has had this issue. I have a 2017 M240i 6Mt with only 8700 miles on it. The other day the check engine light came on a day after getting gas. I thought that it might have something to do with that, but when I brought it in to the dealer it was diagnosed as a bad throttle body and they had to order the part. Though it is being done under warranty, I wonder if anyone else has had this problem.

Was it the actual throttle body or the sensor? I can't imagine a throttle body going bad at 8700 miles. Maybe the flap is getting stuck? Any description from the dealership about what was wrong with it?

The service advisor said it was the throttle body and they would have to order it. He tried to tell me that it could have had something to do with filling up with gas without shutting off the car which sounded like BS to me. I have done that for years with my Infiniti G37.

This isn't a common issue on the B58 or N55 motors.

Just an FYI, the B58 and N55 use valve lift and timing (Valvtronic) to take the place of throttle control in almost all situations. Only in certain situations does the DME (engine computer) use the throttle body. Those situations would include an uncontrolled over-boost situation, excessive detonation, or Valvetronic failure.

Thanks for the info. It makes me wonder if the service advisor wasn't being truthful with me about the issue. Do you think that it might be a VANOS issue? I know on the B58 it requires an engine drop since they are located at the back. I asked the advisor if the work required an engine drop and he definitely said "no", but as I said I now question his truthfulness.

Why would you leave the engine running during fueling? Just curious.

Plus might be illegal depending where you live. Also dangerous for you and others at the station.

To answer the useless comments, I live in an extremely hot and humid climate and the interior of the car gets very uncomfortable for the passengers in a very short time. Perhaps if you have nothing useful to say about the issue, you should consider keeping your unuseful comments to yourself.

A. Dont be an asshole.

B. Its extremely STUPID to fill your car up with the engine running.

C. The repair is getting completed under warranty by the dealer. When they are done with the work look at the repair order and it will list all parts and labor performed.
They wont "lie" about that.
Its quite possible your service adviser is generalizing and just giving you a explanation that he understands how to explain.

A) Good luck with the warranty repairs.

B) Thanks for the explanation, I figured it was something like that.

C) Sorry about the "useless comment ", but IT IS the internet.

D) Changing my username to "Useless Comment"

Sorry, I guess I was a little glib with my comment. I didn't mean to offend anyone. Just concerned about my car.

You really should not fill up your car while it is running ESPECIALLY with people in the car. Seriously, don't do it. It's also very likely illegal in FL as it is in most any state. If people are hot sitting in the car, then roll down the windows. The heat in FL isn't that oppressive that someone can't sit in a car for 2 minutes with the windows down.

Picked up the car today. They ran several tests, including smoke test on the intake system (no leaks), no leaks in the throttle pipe, and did a throttle test which showed slow movement when activating.
They replaced the entire throttle housing assembly (part 13-54-8-601-651, MSRP $641) under warranty.
Seems fine now, but I still can't understand how this part fails with only 8700 miles on the car.
Thank you all for your input.

Items have failure rates. Probably the fact it failed at low mileage tends to support it was due to manufacturing supplier defect and the possibility of it reoccurring is slim.

In most jurisdictions, it is illegal to fuel a vehicle with the engine running, for the simple reason that there is a good possibility that the vehicle will explode, along with you and everything in the vicinity, if you set off a static spark.
DON'T DO IT!
