hey guys, i’m pretty much a car noob and it gets even worse when you begin to involve wheels.

i drive a 230i and have the stock wheels on, but i’ve been looking at getting them replaced, since i’m based in South Florida i’ve been looking at some Vossen CVTs at 19x8.5

would these even fit? how do i look in the future to know if wheels are compatible?

also; are there any other specs to look at?

offset depends on many variables. If you want 8.5" wide wheels, look around the ET38 to ET42 range (lower the number, the more outward the wheel sits toward the fender) to "sit flush" with the fender. Tire size is also a factor you need to figure out. https://tiresize.com/calculator/ You can compare your factory tire size vs going up to a larger wheel/tire set up. You'll want your overall diameter to come as close as possible for many reasons.

The most important thing is to make sure the offset is appropriate for your car. Too high and it will contact the suspension. Too low and it will poke outside the fender and cause rubbing that will require you to modify your fenders.

For an 8.5" wheel, you'd want an offset in the range of ET35-42. Anything higher than ET42 will require a spacer to clear the suspension. The ET42 will accommodate a 235/35/19 tire while the ET35-~38 will limit you to a 225/35/19.

I found this MotoIQ article on How to Properly Select and Size a Tire for Performance to be very informative. Basically, pick your tire first based on performance category and true tread width, then find a rim that's 0.5" wider than the true true width.

Unfortunately, our 2's can't fit all that much tire into our narrow fenderwells. So to get the widest tire possible, we'd probably have to work backwards by picking the wheel width and offset first, then finding a tire with a properly sized tread width for it. Which can be accomplished like this, using Speed Academy's Guide to Picking Wheels and Tires that Fit.

Or alternately, just copy a setup someone else has already done that's proven to fit. This particular forum is kind of bad about having one thread that compiles all that information into one user-friendly thread, but you can kind of piece it together using a combination of the Apex Wheels thread and Apex F22 Fitment Guide, the VMR Wheels thread, and the Other Aftermarket Wheels thread.
