xDrive Tire Suggestions

Hi,

I have a 2016 M235i xDrive and live in Chicago. This is my daily. Currently have Pirelli P7 all run flats. Does anyone know if these are the tires that come with the car?

When time comes to replace, any recommendations for what tires that can perform well for aggressive driving that are all seasons since I do live in Chicago?

if your Pirelli's are the 18" then yes they came with the car.

You really have 2 choices - stick to run flat...or don't. Once you decide how you want to proceed then the sky's the limit.

You will really notice the improvement of going to a dedicated winter snow tire, if you can deal w/ storage (and avoid triple-digit speeds on them). Here you can get them swapped out and stored for free by the tire place I use, and that seems more common with most of the big tire chains (as long as the tires are mounted on their own rims, they will swap them out instead of doing the free rotation). Ditto for the improvements of a true summer performance tire vs. all-seasons. For me, I didn't spend all the money for performance just to forfeit it for a minor maintenance convenience. Conti's, Nokkian, or Blizzaks are very well-regarded for pure winter tires, but I DK if they all make RFT versions.

The Michelin X-Ice are also highly regarded. You have to know your roads though. If your roads are mostly plowed just ice cold (slushy) get one kind of tire, vs roads that aren't plowed just tamped down and lots of snowpack. It makes a difference.

If you do go the snow tire route, see if you can get the smallest rim and largest sidewall.

I have had a set of summer wheels & tires as well as winter wheels and tires. Each of these is a huge improvement over all seasons and an even bigger improvement over run flats. I can change the wheels in about 15 or 20 minutes and typically do a rotation at that time (square set ups for both summer and winter).

Chicago is not that bad, it's flat. Much easier than the East Coast. I've lived in both places.

Anyway AS3+ is all you need if you want one set of tires. Ideally do a nice summer set and winter set but that's up to your storage capacity and desire to change.

Fellas my m240i is a M Performance Edition so it comes with the m405 rims in 225/35/19 f and 245/30/19 r and run-flat Pirelli P Zeros. If I were to do a summer and winter tire it would be a square setup, but what is the biggest summer tire I could run all around? I would like to do 245 or 255 all around. For winter tires what sizes would you recommend?

225/45/17. Wheels are 17x8+35

The smaller the cheaper plus more sidewall for those late winter potholes

The M405 are 7.5" x 19" 225/35R19Y front. 8" x 19" 245/30R19Y rear > to do a square set-up would put you with 225 (as 245/255 are to wide for the 7.5 wide front rim)

Don't do a square tire setup on staggered rims. There's really no point to it, since you can't swap intact wheels front to back, and 225 is the widest tire that will fit on a 7.5 rim safely. There's another thread here on maxxing a square setup if that is a real goal (w/ different wheels and specific offsets, many cram 235's or 245's in front). You can also consider 18" setups, which save significant unsprung weight if you get decent wheels (you'll notice this in daily driving a lot more than an extra 10-2-mm of rubber up front).
