For you folks who have swapped in new regular tires (i.e. non-run-flat), I assume you have these in your trunk:

1. tire repair kit
2. electric-driven pump
3. field car jack
4. wrench + deep socket

I don't seem to be able to find a good quality field car jack. The scissors jack looks so cheap. Is it worth it to lug around a small 18lb pump car jack in the trunk?

If you don't carry a spare, you won't need a jack. The scissor jacks always worked for me, but have not used the BMW versions. For full preparedness, you may want their space saver kit, with a full set of tools nested inside the center of a space saver. If you look here you'll find links to it; just be sure you have it tied down really well, loose wheels bouncing around the cabin are a drag in an accident.

I don't carry a spare but I'm thinking I can repair the tire in the field if it was just a nail.

OK, my 235 has the air compressor and fix-a-flat stuff from the factory. I do carry a Harbor Freight tire plug kit and and pliers in the car in case I get a nail or something in the tire. If you have to do a tire repair you usually don't need to pull the wheel, although often it is easier. Plugging a tire is pretty simple - just pull the offending piece of metal, prep the hole with the abrasive tool and then insert the plug with some cement. All of this is in the HF kit except for the pliers. Oh yes a crappy compact blanket ' towel, gloves, etc. is nice if you are not really dressed for the occasion . Have had to do this twice so far.

As far as a jack, I bought a used BMW jack from an E46 on eBay to keep in my F10 when I swapped the run flats out. Never had to use it, but these jacks are cheap, very compact and work quite well.

I have the $25 Harbor Freight scissor jack which fits perfectly into the factory jack slots. I then have a tire plug kit, some basic hand tools plus the factory air pump and slime kit.

In our 60 combined years of driving, neither my wife or I have had a tire blow out, but we've had a handful of tread punctures which I've temporarily fixed with plugs and then had patched later on. The jack is helpful with removing the wheel and getting better access to the damage.

I got this one the other day for <$30. It is relatively, small, light and it fits the jack point perfectly. The ratchet handle is a nice feature.
