Thanks for posting this data. My numbers were looking at US sales alone. Your data shows some significant sales when factoring in Europe and ROW. All more reason to believe BMW won't be so foolish as to neuter the coupe with FWD.

I think BMW understands that for their brand's more performance-oriented coupe to thrive, it needs not to be FWD, while the research may well support that those who consider a sedan/4-door "coupe" place less emphasis on pure performance and will accept the trade-off for the benefits FWD provides to them. If it weren't so efficient and easy for the general BMW buying public to understand, Marketing might just as well have come up with a different name for the coupe versus the sedan, just as with 3 vs. 4 Series...but 1 is taken and they are running out of intervening numbers.
+1. Marketing names are largely irrelevant to the R&D teams. They don't think about continuing the "2 series" they think about continuing their sub-compact 2-door RWD platform.

Exactly...could just as easily be the 430iS/M440iS...the S stands for Short!

That way, it would make all the sense in the world to some that a short 4 Series coupe remains RWD base with XDrive available.

Yeah, this is nonsense, but nomenclature often is.

I could see them putting a 4 cylinder in the next gen M235i.

The M235i usually follow the European M135i G series and that doesn't come with a B58 anymore. So the writing is on the wall..

Not gonna be a next-gen M235i.
There'll be an 230i with a 4 banger and a M240i with a 6 pack, just like its larger siblings (aka the 3 & 4 series).

They have a 2020 M235i Grand Coupe, on the way.. Why not carry on the same lineage if it's more than likely, going to share the same motor.

Yah, O.K., but I wasn't referring to the FWD Grand Coupe which is a horse of a different colour.
I was referring to the next-gen vehicles which replace the models on the 2Addicts forum.
The 2 series rear wheel drive next gen coupe will have either the 4 banger 230i/230xi or the 6 pack M240i/M240xi.

I highly doubt they would drop the 6 cylinder 2 series. They would then have nothing in that segment to compete with the s3. Granted they could do a higher output 4 cylinder... but why? They have an engine ready to go...

Since you seem to have all the answers before BMW does, are they going to offer a manual option in their supposed '40i' variant?

I hope you are right, but it wouldn't surprise me if they did drop the 6-cylinder. A higher output 4-cylinder would suit the car better in all reality, while possibly promoting more sales of the pricier M2. A 4-pot M235i would need to be 340HP+ and still sound decent to even be worth a look though.

Definitely not interested in turbo 4, might make decent power, but will never possess the charisma of the 6 pot, in smoothness, sound or power delivery.

This is exactly what's going to happen; this time around, since they have a longer gestation period to play with, they'll want to place some distance between the top-tier 2 series and the M2, unlike the originally M2, which had the same motor and standard features, as the M235i.
