I went out yesterday and ran the camera cable from the license plate into the trunk. Next step, power the camera and route the cable to the head unit (hard part I think).

Is the kit from bimmer-tech still available that anyone knows of? The link mentioned earlier in this thread is dead...I would like to retrofit my M235i with this as well! (Have nav/tech package)

Thanks for the video! This looks a bit daunting but I'd be willing to give it a shot. What tools did you use to remove the vents/dash components? Are they just held in place with tabs that can be pried open with a thin blade screwdriver? Same with the seats and rear trim to route the cable.

Found this one.. a bit cheaper than bimmertech especially if adding front camera.

New to BMW and have been reading a lot on installing a backup camera and have a few questions.
First, this is not a slam on BimmerTech, but I've noticed they charge a lot for what would otherwise be simple modifications via BimmerCode and an OBD tool - IE, you could pay $99 to enable video in motion, $35 to change startup animation, etc. another $35 to to remove the startup disclaimer and you're already at $170. Or, for less than $80 you could have a paid version of BimmerCode and an OBD scanner and make changes to your heart's content. That said, I would expect the $700 backup camera retrofit to be a similar over-charge. So my question is - can I buy a compatible camera, harness, and camera module from Ebay and enable the camera with BimmerCode myself? If so, I could spend $250 rather than $700. |
