Potholes

My 230i is on Continental DWS 06 205/50/17. These are working great for my DD, but I'm worried about potholes. Without changing wheels, what can I do to get my wheels a little further off the pavement next time I buy tires?

205/60/17

225/50/17

225/60/17

Will they fit in the wheel wells?

These will effect revolutions per mile which will effect a few things but probably not a big deal.

Also I'm thinking a couple extra psi would help

225/45-18 on 18x8 ET45 wheels fit without rubbing on my M240i, speedo reads about 1% low as opposed to 4% high on stock tyres, 225/50-17 should be the same overall dimensions in the wheel wells.

Your goal should be to ensure that the diameter of the tire you choose is roughly the same as the OEM diameter. I doubt that a couple of tenths of an inch larger would matter, and that would help you achieve your goal.

If this sort of thing is new to you, I suggest calling Tire Rack and talking to one of their people. They are excellent at helping us with these kinds of issues. If you tell them what your principal concerns are, they will be able to tell you how best to achieve what you want.
