18" vs. 19"
Since I bought my 2016 M235i a few months ago, I've been obsessing about finding the right aftermarket wheels. I finally concluded that I preferred BBS CH-Rs over everything else and found a used 18" set with new rubber in the finish I was looking for (titanium) for a killer price. I pulled the trigger and love everything about them, except I can't help but think every time I look at them they should be 19's because 18's just look a little too small for the F22 body.
I love every picture I see online with the 19" CH-Rs and I keep debating if I should sell the ones I bought and buy a new set. I'm probably overthinking this. Can anyone give me a good reason I should stick with the 18" other than I got a great deal on used ones and might as well keep them. Yes, smaller wheels weigh a little less, but isn't that weight difference negligible? Appreciate any thoughts on this. Here are some pics of my car with the 18". You'll get better performance with the 18's. More sidewall to absorb bumps and potholes. It doesn't really make sense to spend the extra money to get 19's, but if it really bothers you then get 19's.

You could also try lowering the car to close the wheel gap and give the illusion that the wheels are 19's

all things being equal I think 19's are too big.
i.e. http://www.flickriver.com/photos/par...e/28964181180/ if you keep the outer tire diameter the same size you practically have no sidewall. Will look like you are driving around on your rims : ) Yes dimension wise the 19's fill out better due to the small relative wheel well opening to fender above - but in my personal preference tires don't look good unless you can see the meat. Maybe I'm old school who knows. Seth P.S. your black on black on titanium is gorgeous. |

You car looks great! If those are 18s they are the perfect size. I test drove a 240i with 19s and I didn't like the ride at all compared to the 18s on my car, they also were noisier. I personally wouldn't touch 19s on this car after trying out the 240. Go find a series with 19s and try before you make any changes... you might like it, you might not, but at least you will know before you go down that path.
If you decide to sell those 18s, I would be interested! |

All the stuff I read when pondering the same question showed that there really is no performance gains by going from 18 to 19" wheels - in fact it tends to add weight so you are actually lose performance with the larger wheels. The real issue for me, though, is the state of the roads where I live. They are doing a lot of construction and there have been some pretty awful potholes and sections with those metal plates over the road for months.
This article seemed pretty helpful. At least for the car they tested, the 18s were the sweet spot. https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...-wheels-tires/ |

You need a drop, not 19’s. I’m running 18 x 8.5 et 45 and 18 x 9.5 et 58 Apex EC-7 with 5mm spacers all around and Dinan springs. I never think about getting 19’s. Dial in your stance and you’ll be happy. The BBS CH-R is an awesome wheel.

Thanks for your responses everyone. You've reassured me I should stop obsessing.
B5btogo, can you tell me more about how much your car is lowered? I know nothing about lowering and probably wouldn't want to drop more than 0.75" and at that point I figure it's not worth the money. How much would it cost to have a BMW shop install Dinan springs? What kind of performance benefits would this give me? Is it really worth it? |
