Navigation System option

Question for you addicts. Does the "Navigation System" option only affect if the Infotainment system can do GPS navigation? Or does it affect other aspects of the system (like size, resolution, other capabilities, iDrive version)?

I personally don't feel like i need GPS navigation as my phone can do that just fine. But i'm not sure if not having the option degrades functionality in other ways.

Information appreciated.

Thanks!

Lower resolution, smaller, no connected drive, no extended instrument cluster and more. Don't skip it

Yeah iDrive navigation is not just GPS navi, it packs a lot more.

What's said above is correct, plus I think you can't have dual screen without navi, right? No widgets as well maybe?

You also get OK Google functionality which I use all the time, much better then using your phone while driving

It doesn't look as bad in person as in pictures but I would have been disappointed if I didn't go for it at the last minute.

Don't skip it. The options should be big screen or NO screen - the little screen is just sad.

I'll also say that while I use Google Maps on my phone ALL the time, since I travel for a living meaning umpteen rental cars a year and my other four cars lack navigation, I find I prefer the iDrive navigation to it. Worth the $2K for the whole package.

My only gripe is that the voice recognition of addresses is lousy. Though oddly, voice recognition for POI search is near perfect, presumably because that IS Google.

One more consideration: although Google traffic is pretty good, the built-in nav's RTTI seems better to me, and it is certainly safer to use when driving than your phone.

No, but I am actually curious how flexible and intuitive the voice system is. For example with Google maps you can say "find the nearest ___".

If my chipotle comment offended you I am sorry that you have a stick up your ass

Glad I'm not the only one. "Greenville, South Carolina" was taking me to Michigan then Florida. I've resorted to touch pad typing to avoid the hassle, especially if someone else is in the car. POI is spot on for me also.

Skip it. Spend the money on a tune or an exhaust. It's a car and not a computer.

Right - never any need to navigate in a motor vehicle.

Actually, I think this depends on your location. In my city, Google Maps' RTTI is far, far more up to date than the iDrive Nav's.

As for the comments about never needing nav, it's a car not a computer, etc. ... actually your car is a computer because it needs one to run, period. It's called the ECU. Hell: even the amplifier in our cars (and most cars these days) is a chip-based Class D component stuck onto a circuit board.

Anyway ... as for the OPs query: it's been answered, but I'm of the opinion that the Nav package is worth its cost. Now that he knows everything that's included in the package, it's up to the OP to decide if those upgrades are worth it to him.
