Indeed.

My crazy ex-wife kept using something like this as an ashtray in a Honda minivan. It eventually caught fire and burned to the ground.

I keep my glasses-cleaning cloth, a pen and my chapstick in there.

It really is an ashtray. It's not made of plastic, per se. It's that same material that those cheap black ashtrays in bars were made of (back when it was still legal to smoke in bars). At any rate, the little rubber mat works great and it looks entirely stock because if you don't have the smoker package that's what you would get instead of the ashtray. It does make that space much more usable.

For those that have asked, here is the ashtray-turned-cubby insert.

But the owners manual makes it clear there is a insert that is removed to dump the ashes. Without that, and apparently we do not get that here in the states, it should not be used as a ashtray.

The whole thing lifts out easily for cleaning. It's an ashtray.

Ordered my $6 rubber mat instead.

Nothing. I opened it once, shut it, and have never opened it again.

I'm telling you, the little rubber insert is the best six bucks you will put in the car. It creates a pretty usable, attractive space from something that was entirely useless. I got a discount on it and it was $5.99 + tax. I think the actual retail was $7 and change.

I've spent quite a bit of money on appearance mods and accessories since I got my car but this was easily the best six bucks I have spent. I highly recommend this little "mod". The part has to be ordered by your dealer from Germany but mine arrived in a little over a week. $5.99 plus tax = $6.47.
which dealer? I'm in socal as well

Does not lift out in my car. My owners manual states there is a removable insert. Not one in my car

I had to really tug on it the first time. I was afraid I was going to break it. Second time it came out easily. If you have the flip top, it should be the removable tray. The entire unit comes out.

Exactly. Open the lid, then using both hands grab it close to the base where the hinges are and pull hard. It will pop out and nothing will break. It's very strong.

Got mine at BMW of Ontario but he had to order it from what he calls "The Mother Country" (Germany). Only took about a week though. Not sure if you'll get the discount because he's a buddy of mine but you can ask.

Posted this also on another thread: the rubber ashtray insert is apparently now on backorder from Germany. I'm hoping that since it's a fairly popular OEM option part in Europe that the supply will be recharged quickly ... I wonder if it's unexpected U.S. demand that caused the supply issue? Surely not ...

It actually fits a good deal of things, although it would be nice to have a larger compartment there. Usually mine has a pack of gum and always has my garage key, but usually I leave it only to rest my keys or something when I get into the car.

So are you just removing the "door"/cover to the ash tray or is it the entire cubby including the outlet/cigarette lighter. If this will create a lot more space by removing the whole cubby I would be very interested in doing this. Does anyone have a picture of the thing installed, sorry if its in the thread.
