It's an OEM rubber pad that costs around 5€.

Now I can put my iPhone 6 there and it doesn't move.

Looks like the US price is $6.97. Does it cover up where the lid attaches so it looks OEM? Can you shoot a closer view and possible a pic of the mat out?

What do you think the insert in the euro models is made out of titanium or glass or something? My E92 was a euro delivery and also had an plastic ashtray and never melted. I don't know if theres such a think as the smokers package or not, but my manual says it's an ashtray and I bought my car here in the US of A.

I've never seen one without the ashtray so does that mean the "option" is standard in every car? Unless someone posts a picture of their insert and it's radically different, or their factory manual says it has an alternative use...

You get the cigarette lighter...That's it...I have it in my car.

I didn't order the smokers package and didn't get a cigarette lighter, just a plug for the 12v outlet. Also only got the rubber lined box opposed to the lid.

I test drove one with the ashtray and it was the car the manager was driving. He put his change in it and it rattled like crazy... hated it.

I much prefer the rubber box thing. Change does rattle and a perfect spot for sunglasses.

Yep, it is indeed an ashtray. Thanks to those who already knew this. And I have pulled it out to reveal a nice open bin that is genuinely useful now. All I need to do it cut a piece of that tool box lining foam for the bottom to stop any rattles. Woohoo! It's the small things that make me happy.

Maybe BMWUSA fit the smoker's package as stock. Here in Canada, unless you ordered the option, you get the OEM rubber tray insert. Perfect for my cell phone. I can't be bothered upload a pic. Google it for yourself.

I have a portable BAC tester in mine. Good for that final " should I call a cab " moment.

Aside from that it isn't ver useful, you could keep a little usb charger dongle in there for if a friend needs to charge their phone or something.

No, metal, like every car I've ever driven equipped with a ashtray. Oh, and removable so ashtray can be emptied. And my owners manual does identify it as a ashtray but equipped with a insert which you remove to empty ashtray. Apparently we do not get the insert here in the states

yea I don't remember that option offered to me on my order and I got a cig lighter and on my VIN summary it has the smoker package....removed it and put in a USB charger. Not the outlet behind the console has a black plug in it instead of a lighter....

Well not every car, like I said my E92 also had a plastic ashtray. Plastic is pretty durable and won't melt from a cigarette/joint depending what your habit is lol. I feel like metal would start to get carbon burns and wouldnt look too attractive after a while, whereas black plastic is the same color as burnt resin. Materials aside...I can't speak for everyone but I live stateside, and have a removable ashtray. It wouldn't make sense for the euro models to be removable and not in the USA. I don't think BMW expects you to vacuum out your ashes or whatnot. And the lid is there to not have the ash fly everywhere when you're driving with the windows down.

I believe your thinking along the same lines as me. I was wondering how one might mount an iPod Touch or equivalent in that spot, always USB'ed to the car for tunes (and power) and providing full-time DashCommand display of oil temp, etc.

Would be a fun project if I had a 3D printer to build a little angled mount that clips into that spot.
