Yeah but who wants to throw rocks or mulch or even a bunch of lumber into the "back" of a nice minivan? With the truck having a totally separate bed for that stuff means I don't have to worry about fucking up any of my interior.

Now if you don't haul any of that and just pickup the odd piece of lumber every few months then yeah, take the time to gently shove it into your minivan or whatever you got or rent a truck from home depot.

But buying a minivan instead of a truck to do truck things.... nah.

Yeah this situation calls for a truck, there's carrying "stuff" and carrying "truck stuff". For home depot runs, there's a reason so many contractors use a minivan but landscapers use a truck right.

I've had three truck, still own two. My advice is do it right and get a 3/4 ton with a diesel engine. I had a 2004 Dodge Ram and it was amazing. Had it up to 100,000 and the only thing that ever required repair was a steering pump. I have a 2004 Duramax now and it's inferior to the Dodge.

My advice? 3/4 ton Dodge Crew Cab Sport with the Cummins.

The best Cummins ever made was the 12v 5.9L followed by the 24v 5.9L. I had the Cummins 600 in my 2004 and it was an insane engine. Best of the best. I kept the exhaust stock minus the removal of the cat and it was perfect. It was replaced, as we all know, with the much more powerful 6.7L.



The Cummins diesel will go down in history as one of the best diesel engines ever built. It's for that reason I'll never get anything but a Dodge.

I only have the Duramax currently because my father-in-law bought it new and wasn't driving it anymore. It's the pre-emissions LB7 which is a no-nonsense 6.6L V8. I have close to 200K on her and apart from injectors and glow plugs, it's 100% original.

If you're buying new, the truth is any option from the Big 3 (and Toyota) will be fine. They are all around the same reliability, even RAM. It really comes down to styling preference and dealer incentives.

I have mostly owned Ford trucks, but had an old GMT-800 and a new rental Silverado that was great. Cross shopped Tundras with my current truck. Currently have a 2016 F-150 5.0l nearing 200k miles. Probably will be looking to upgrade to a F-250 7.3 gasser in the near future for the towing and payload increase. Towing with a half ton through the TN/Carolina mountains has been sketchy at times.

100% not buying new. I have not and will never buy a new vehicle. At a minimum it will be 2-3 years old.

What's your budget, use case, and weight you wanna tow. There's a big difference between a "truck for hauling some crap for the yard" and "a truck that's my daily that needs to be luxurious and also tow a 8000lb trailer and haul bricks"

We like our gen3 raptor too. We feel its an excellent family truck. Plus, if shit hits the fan, its pretty good setup for running to the hills/desert to avoid the zombie apocalypse...lol.

I do wish it got better MPG though. I cant seem to get past 15MPG on highway in mine.

I love my 2021 F150 Platinum Powerboost hybrid. Great mileage and pretty quick plus the 7.2 onboard generator comes in handy.

3/4 ton or 1 ton trucks hold their value much better than a half ton. I'll never buy a half ton. If you're going to get a truck, do it properly.

Even at 2-3 years, all of the half tons are pretty much even.

If you're towing >6000lb regularly, definitely recommend upping to a 3/4 ton. Despite marketing crap about half tons with 10k tow ratings, the reality is that even max tow/payload spec are usually sub-7k and don't do great in the hills with that much behind them.

Was in the same boat with our E70 X5, but went in a different direction and traded the E70 for my 2018 K2xx gen Chevy Suburban. That became my DD and my wife took over driving our E93. Big change going from an E93 335i to a Suburban, but I love my Chevy. Needed something to haul three rows of passengers including dogs, and cargo space simultaneously for long road trips, and then also "truck" duty for hauling stuff for home and yard. It's been great. No regrets at 90k miles.

For pickups, the Hemi 5.7L V8 is a solid engine, especially with their version of the ZF8, but they're definitely known for low-mileage lifter failure which can also take out the camshaft. Have seen some teardowns of this. If you're religious about oil changes and avoid long idle periods, it can reduce the issue. The Chevy's are also known for lifter failures due to the variable displacement stuff, but is completely random. Some will go for 200k miles, others fail at 30k. Not sure about the Fords.
