Ticking noise

Anyone experiencing a ticking sound coming from the back half of the 2er?

It's really annoying, as soon as i get over 30-40km/h I'd get this ticking sound come from the rear half of the car...

It's been a week or 2 now... Can't really pin point what it is... I don't have rear passengers very often (average once every 2-3 months)

It's not one off or occasionally, it's all the time over a certain speed.

does it do it at idle? Cold start? or just when driving?

If u are hearing it from the rear of the vehicle - id be looking at the exhaust valve flap.
Very common on the newer BMW cars and will require a whole new muffler

Nope not on idle or cold start. Just at 50km/h or above and on turns. I don't have OEM exhaust, so no need muffler

I took it in to BMW today, they've booked it in for the 5th of July to fix it (I know wtf 3 weeks away!)

Tech said there's the same noise when turning as well coming from rear left hand side... He didn't exactly say what it is until they have it booked in...

I think it might be the bushings

Do you have wheel spacers? If you do and use too long bolts, they can hit the internal park brake.

Or check if you have stones between the stone guard and rotor.

Just an update... So I dropped the car off on Monday late afternoon for Tuesday service (so i don't have to get there at 7am in the morning)...

Tuesday - They called asking if I want to replace the front 2 tyres for $840 obviously i said no, also unrelated to the problem.

Later that day, they called to update. Say they've stripped the rear bumper, rear seats and still working on finding the solution, will keep it for another day.

Wednesday - Called me, saying they think the problem is from the bodywork... apparently a gap can cause squeaking... When he said it, in my head i was like WTF really?!

So currently they have to take some photos and send it to BMW Australia to confirm measurements... So they're going to keep it for another day.

It seems a little far fetch to me bodywork can cause squeaking when turning and cruise speed above 50km/h...

Ps. obviously the car has NEVER been in an accident.

Thoughts?

I bet it's the plastic lid covers for the harness hookups at the top of the rear seats. four of em.

thats what it was at least for me!

now if anyone can figure out that annoying rattle behind the instrument cluster that it seems a lot of us have...

So a bit more of an update...

I think first off i think the title is a little misleading... It's a little more than just a ticking noise (ticking noise only in cruise speed), there's actually a squeaking noise when turning.

So they’ve diagnosed the problem... apparently between the seats and the rear part of the car... They have to reinforce a part (by spot welding)... so they have to take it to the panel shop (awaiting BMW Australia’s approval), once approved they have to organise for the panel shop to look at it... So if it’s within a week, they’ll just give me a loan car if it’s a few weeks they’ll put it back together and give car back until that date. (but they're avoiding putting the car back together and take it apart as more things can potentially break)

I'm sorry to hear that they have to do so much to your car!! All for a ticking noise that began causing a wonder. I honestly don't understand how an automated system can have issues with welding and if so, how many other cars out there with these issues? Maybe there is one small issue with a body component that was assembled weird with your chassis causing this result. It further gives you a headache and loses your faith in their manufacturing. Hopefully it gets resolved. Any lemon laws does your country have?

It's a bit too soon for the lemon law lol extra welding is to reinforce the joints, sometimes it might be the cold and the heat causing the parts to flex.

Will see what happens next week and update further

Recent 2014 m235i owner here.
I hear a creak coming from somewhere in the back (driver's side only), and it does not come on all the time, but happens often and is noticeable at all speeds. It sounds like plastic rubbing on another piece of plastic or glass rattling.

Sounds familiar? How did you resolve your issue?

This morning at cold start, I heard something from behind the instrument cluster -- sounded as if something was rolling around (bottle of water, roll of quarters...).

I shoved some foam into the hinge so that it takes slight pressure to lock the covers into place. This will keep the cover from rattling around. Ever since I did this I haven't heard that particular rattle again.

Still have no idea whats going on with the rattle behind the intrument cluster.

My cars been doing the same thing. I turn right and I hear a "tick tick tick tick" from the left side and vice versa over about 50km/h. But it reminds me of the sound a rock stuck in the tire would make but nothings to be found. I'll likely take my wheels off and check everything myself this week before contacting my dealer.

It ended up being what I said previously, there's a gap in the structure of the vehicle (somewhere between the rear seat and boot) they rewelded the joint, put expanding foam there as well. Now it's fine
