M235i very slow in 1/4

Hi guys,

I'm new to the F22 chassis, I have a BMW M235i F22, and my only mod is a BMS intake, no tune, no downpipe, and nothing else. The tires are Bridgestone Potenza S001 225 Front and 245 Rear with 280 treadwear.

Yesterday I took the car to the drag strip and the best time I could accomplish was 14.1, other times were 14.3 and 14.4 (this one with Launch control).

I got beat by a Mustang EcoBoost twice!!! I have noticed that using Launch Control doesn't help at all, hence the worst time of the night.

To be honest, I was expecting the car to be faster and for sure not be beaten by a Mustang EcoBoost, I feel like the car is slow and should be quicker, do you think these are accurate numbers? I'm really disappointed with the car, I know I can tune the car and it will be much faster, but I was expecting more from stock form.

What was your 60 foot?
What was your trap speed?
If a 6MT, what rpm are you shifting at?
What was the temperature when you ran?
Have you raced at a track before?

It's an 8 speed auto transmission, the trap speed was 96.875 mph.
The other parameters I don't really know, I'm from Costa Rica and here they only give you the time and trap speed.

I have raced previously yes, I had an Audi S3 with stage 2+ which was way faster, I know it was modified but again, I was hoping for something better from the BMW

97mph is low as these cars should be seeing 104-107mph in 60 degree sea level air. Hot, summer air can knock out a couple of mph. Even so, your car should have been seeing around 101-102mph at least in the hot Costa Rican summer air.

That sucks that they don't give you 60 foot as that answers a lot of questions. Seeing that you're an automatic (presumably RWD and not AWD), my guess is you're spinning the tires a lot on the launch. The tires are likely spinning so much that you spin rapidly through 1st and shifts into 2nd too early. You end up with a really slow 60 foot and the early shift into 2nd kills trap speed thus the reason for the rather low trap speed. It's quite possible you're also spinning through 2nd too which makes matter worse.

Do not use launch control with a RWD car. It's too much for street tires and you'll spin way too much. Guaranteed.

I suggest the following:

1) Put the car in Sport+.
2) Put the trans in manual mode and select 1st.
3) Roll up to the starting line and set the staging beams.
4) Just before it's time to race, left foot on brake hard, right foot on gas and bring the rpms to around 1800rpms to build some boost.
5) When it's time to go, release the brake and go 50-60% on the throttle. You'll want a little bit of spin and want to keep the rpms above 3000rpms shortly after coming off the line to keep from bogging. You'll likely not be able to go full throttle in 1st due to managing wheelspin. If you hear the tires scampering on the pavement, you'll know you had a good launch. If you hear a bunch of squeal, chances are you gave it too much throttle and your 60 foot is junk. If the car can handle the 1800rpm brake stall launch, then try 2000rpm on the next run.
6) All shifts through the 1/4 mile should be at 6900-7000rpms. DO NOT BELIEVE what people say about shifting at peak power (which is around 6200-6400rpms). You need to overshoot the peak a bit to have maximum torque into the next gear. I've calculated the shifts points for these cars. It's 6900-7000rpms in every gear.

A good 60 foot with a RWD M235 on street tires is around 2.0 seconds. With amazing prep, you might could get a 1.9. Every .1 seconds in 60 foot equates to around .15 seconds in the 1/4 mile ET. For example, if you pull a 2.0 60 foot on 13.4 run and then the next run you blow the tires off and get a dismal 2.4 60 foot, the car will likely run a 14.0 or worse.

60 foot is a HUGE deal. It's why AWD cars, like your old S3, are a beast in the 1/4 mile. They 60 foot exceptionally well thus the reason they tend to smoke cars off the line. From a roll, they're not nearly as impressive as they are from a dig. I've raced Stage 2+ S3s and S4s in my Stage 2 M235 6MT. It's not even close from a dig. By the time I'm at 60, they're two bus lengths ahead. From a 40mph roll? Neck and neck to 80-90mph and then I walk them.

What did the S3 run ET and MPH in 1/4 mile?

It's been my experience that some tracks are just slow for no apparent reason.

That is odd. I would expect anywhere from 12.9 - 13.3 @ 107-109 mph.

When I avidly was into drag racing years ago, rarely did I ever see a stock street car come remotely close magazine numbers. Most people absolutely suck at drag racing, especially launching and shifting. I've seen lots and lots of 14 second Vipers

True, and also C & D uses roll out, which shaves off a couple tenths. C & D had the M240i at 12.7 @ 111 mph, so real world would be 12.9 or so. In 2017 I went 12.39 @ 111 on a 1.91 sixty, with a JB4 and maybe 4-5 extra pounds of boost. I will say these cars, with stockish power, in ZF8 guise are pretty easy to launch and shift. Once you start adding power it gets pretty tough to cut a decent sixty.
