Unfortunately the 11367 does not fit on a '16 M235i without a significant cut on the bumper. The bottom of the receiver is flush with the bottom of the bumper cover. So I would need to have some pretty significant cuts. Outside of that it fits well.
I did call curt and there is no way to cross reference a hitch that has similar mount points, but a dropped receiver. I am going to ask a local welder to see how much it will run to get the receiver dropped 1.9" and ideally pulled back toward the rear axel by .25" to hide it even further. |

cth6, you should not have to cut anymore than I did out og your bumper insert. if you have the stock diffuser insert it might look a bit more drastic than mine since I have the performance diffuser insert but there is no difference between the 2014 & 2016. Someone correct me if i am wrong

The picture is not the best, but the bottom line of the bumper cover is slightly above the bottom of the exhaust covers. |

Not my car, but here is a good picture of how boxy and far out the diffuser is on my car. Too dark to take photos right now. |

All of the bumpers are the same - so you should be able to cut it out of the bumper the same - not sure why it would be any different.
If you want to drop it further, you could most likely take it to a local machine shop, have them cut the two pieces of flat plate that hold the receive to the cross beam, and then have them weld extensions in place. It's obviously going to cost you more than a few snips of the bumper, but if you don't want the cutout it's a pretty easy job for anybody with some scraps of 1/4" plate and a welder.

If anyone is reading this thread and has installed this or any hitch on an M2, please post back your experience. Similarly, if anyone has knowledge regarding whether this hitch could be fitted to an M2, please post back here. Thanks!

Thanks for posting, this is very helpful. I've been thinking of easy ways to get my motorcycle to the track. I think if I had a really small lightweight trailer, this would work well for occasional trips.

Another Curt install!
First, I would like to thank ehagerty for taking the plunge on this one. I finally ordered the hitch and had a local shop do the install while my vehicle was getting other work done (among more serious work, installed weather stripping mentioned here http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1200964 ). For this I especially thank ehagerty since I provided links to this thread to the shop to convince them to undertake the project.
The result looks very professional and, to me, completely stock. I plan to pick up a rack this week and have a new bike on order as well. Notes: the shop elected not to cut the heat shield in case I wanted to remove the hitch later but I plan to ask them to go ahead and cut it to fit the next time I bring the car in. The install was in conjunction with that of the performance diffuser, which "needs" the extended exhaust tips for the right look, OEM in either chrome or carbon fiber. I ordered the carbon fiber since I'm not keen on the chrome ones. Edit: This is a 2016 convertible with all the sensors -no wiring was in the way and everything works. Might have to turn off parking sensors once a rack is attached to avoid the beeping. Without further ado, photos: Last edited by voukephalas; 09-04-2016 at 09:54 PM.. |

Other than being more expensive and more difficult to obtain in the U.S., is there any reason why the BMW towbar (P/N 71606874227) would not fit on the M235i? I like the idea of the potentially stealthy install.

There is a small difference in ball sizes. Standard European ball size is 50 mm (1 31⁄32 in) here in the US 2 inches (50.8 mm) or 1 7⁄8 in (47.6 mm) is typical. I would guess 0.8mm does not make any difference for a 2 inch coupler. But, if your small trailer only had a coupler that fit a 1 7⁄8 in ball you would have to change it to the US standard 2 inches or European 50mm.

Here's the instructions for the BMW OEM hitch in case anyone decides to go that route.

Figured I'd update this thread with my results.
I had the Curt hitch installed by a local company. They managed to do it without any trimming, but I'm not sure that's a good thing. I seem to have a different style bumper than OP. You can see in the pics that the hitch pushes right up on the bumper. I mentioned it to the installer and they made it sound like no big deal. I'm thinking about bringing it back for trimming. What say you fine folks? |

ehagerty, Yes, Yes Yes, Fantastic !!! *canīt believe I finally found a thread with exactly what I was looking for* Just let me say I also love the look and convenience of my hitch racks and had almost given up hope on finding a way to fit one in my upcoming M140i. Loved your install and 1Up rack, however Im partial to this one myself ... http://kuatracks.com/products/hitch/sherpatm-2-0/ ... the black and chrome would look badass in a 2 series. Now the hard part: As I mentioned, Im getting a new M140i early next year, and of course want to fit the Curt Tow Hitch so I can continue to use my hitch rack, or even perhaps get a new one in black. Questions: 1. In your experience, do you think this same Hitch will fit the M140i? - the backend seems to share quite a bit with the 235/240 ... I heard you had an issue fitting a hitch to a M135i ... perhaps you know a way around it? 2. Any advice before I order the Tow Hitch and take your step by step to an installer? For adapting the Curt Hitch referenced above would you say it is required to fit the MPerformance exhaust and/or Diffuser? I canīt really tell from the pictures, but it seems a bit smaller than the standard exhaust and I had the notion that it might help make room for the tow hitch. I was looking around with the folks at etrailer with the same idea, but I was looking at the wrong hitch and the schematics didn't match so iīd given up. The folks there did point me the wrong way, I suppose itīs a good policy to recommend OEM approved installations first: http://www.etrailer.com/question-194852.html?fb=yes If you can give me a few pointers with what to look out for in the install for the M140i Iīll go to my installer when I get my new car, and post the step by step in the M135/M140 forums. Oh ... one final question ... does anyone have experience with upholding the warranty with BMW with this type of MOD ? In particular because there is no electric install and no real towing being done ... thoughts? Thanks so much! Last edited by tubmw; 12-14-2016 at 01:43 PM.. Thanks to OP and followers for this thread! Will totally address my bicycle issue and I am hoping to tow a small trailer. Lighting kits aside, has anyone used this for a class 1 trailer? I just need something big enough for track wheel sets or kayak fishing trips.
