So I added the new G29 (M40i) to my garage. I am keeping the 2015 M235 Coupe for now as I need a proper winter car. The M235 has about 40k miles on it and has been my DD for the past four years. To date it has been flawless and I can recommend this car to anybody looking for a powerful fun car with DD qualities.
I went for the Z4 M40i purely for the fun factor and because I find the car simply stunning from both aesthetics (YMMV) and power delivery. At 382hp (M235: 320) the Z4 is just a "topless" rocket! Driving dynamics are excellent and steering seems actually more precise. I wanted a convertible and was considering the M240 but did not want the "old tech" (cockpit, iDrive) that comes with it. The G29 is just the next generation of everything. For all those 2-Series convertible owners (that truly don't need a second row of barely usable seats) you should consider the Z4 as another option!

Congratulations on your new acquisition!
That's consistent with C&D's review of the Supra, in which they spoke highly of that version's steering performance at Summit Point Motorsports Park (no mention of which course they were running): "The steering slathers the rest of the experience in glory: accurate, well weighted, and quick enough to keep up with the directional schizophrenia that is a Supra on a tight track." This model sounds like the real deal, regardless of which version a buyer chooses.

https://audiclubna.org/north-atlanti...ategories/hpd/. People come up to this event all the way from the Mid-Atlantic, so if anyone's interested it's usually a good idea to register early. The exercises are challenging and translate well to driving on the white stuff on public streets and highways. The instruction is top-notch, as well. Note that at present the dates on the club's web pages are a bit confused and the actual dates of these two winter performance driving events are: Jan. 24-26, 2020 Feb. 21-23, 2020. This is the current schedule for each of the events:

Stunning car! Congrats! I saw one in real life for the first time just last week. I was very impressed with what I saw. I loved how wide and low it was and how fat those rear tires were. Seems like a proper sports car. If I were in the market for an automatic roadster, I have no doubt that is what I'd buy. It's really a shame BMW gave the coupe rights to Toyota and didn't provide a manual transmission option. The Supra is ugly as hell and 6-speeds belong in a roadster, if nothing else.
Enjoy that beauty! Only thing it needs is a proper BMW grille insert with vertical slats and then it's perfection.

Congrats on your new ride! I've seen a few at the dealership and got to see a beautiful version available for test drive at a recent bmw event. Two things I was disappointed in with the new design is cup holders in the center armrest and the huge holes on each side of the convertible top when it is retracted. That will be a collect all for leaves and debris. I wish they would have made winglets to make for a solid tonneau cover. Anyway, happy driving!

To be fair the Z4 M40 price wise does not compete with a M240 convertible, they are about $10K apart. The Z4 with 4 cylinder is priced about the same as the M240 so in reality its a much tougher decision than electronics.

That was my situation exactly, with my budget, either get the 4 cyl Z4 or for the same money an M240i, I went for the M240i, to me the xdrive for winter, the extra power of the 6 cyl, the back seat for cargo or passengers was a no brainer. I do like the looks of the Z4 more but couldn’t justify the cost.

That is certainly the situation now. However, many of us with 235/240 convertibles are looking ahead. With the rumored next version of the 2 Series only being available as a coupe, our only viable BMW convertible options would be the Z4 40M or the new M440 or M4, expected to be released in the next year or two. My guess is the Z4 M40 will compete pretty closely with the future M440 convertible on price or possibly even be a bit cheaper. Of course the size and form factor between the two will be quite different. I'm only at 38K miles on my M235, so my next car is still several thousand miles and a few years away, but I am always thinking ahead.

Of course budget is always a consideration.
Regarding driving dynamics a Z4 M40i is a step-up from a 2er Vert and certainly way ahead of the M440 (nimble etc), but YMMV, if the current 4 Series is any guide.

If you could get a manual in the Z4 4 cylinder it would be interesting but I’m a stone age manual driver. A manual M240 convertible will be a collector item because so few will be sold. Its like trying to find an E46 manual with low miles and not totally abused.

The trunk in the Z4 is actually pretty sizable, as the roof does not fold up into the trunk space.
It has a cargo space of 9.9 cf vs the 2-series coupe of 13.8 cf. Hence, about 70% of the 2-series size.
