Give Level 10 transmissions a call. They are in Hamburg, NJ for reference.

Why can't it be fixed?

You can't rebuild them as ZF doesn't sell rebuild kits. A new trans from BMW is around $3500.

How can you sell the car if the transmission is failing? I guess you could lie.
Too bad about the absence of a rebuild kit. Have you shopped around for a junker?

Go on www.car-part.com and source one from a wrecked car. Then have your independent shop install it. Looks like you should be able to get a good used one for around $2200.

I'd be interested to know what symptoms your car is exhibiting to lead you to believe you need a new transmission.

He's getting a grind on the 1-2 shift. A common issue with these transmissions, especially ones that have been driven hard with aggressive/fast shifts. He bought the car used.

Of course - I don't know what I was thinking.

Depends on how much you love the car. $3500+install is way less than buying a new car. One of the pitfalls of own a BMW (or any other expensive import).

my 2017 M240i goes out of warranty in 2021. It is a low mileage car (our toy- 2.5 years old and 7K miles), but I have some reservations about keeping it long term just because they are expensive to repair.

I had a issue with a Saturn Vue that was a money pit (mostly caused by the dealership and their ineffectual repairs to it). Wound up trading it even with the issues for a Hyundai Santa Fe. Got a decent trade in even with the issue disclosed to the dealership.

Something worth considering if the thought of spending a bunch of money on an out of warranty car. What you are likely to lose in trade in value will be less than the repair costs if you buy a new trans and pay for the install.

Seems like the car will be challenging to sell without taking a substantial hit unless the transmission issue is addressed?
