For states where there is no sales tax benefit, you are right, it becomes a bit dicier to find value. Traditionally though, BMW (and Mercedes) heavily incentivize their leases with high residuals. Not so much with the 2 series at least early on in the 2016 model year. |

Question, is this 55% for a 39mo lease? If so, that's equivalent payment as a 58.5% residual on a 36mo lease. Which is about what they were sitting at at the beginning of MY'16. Residuals dropped roughly 4% on all MY'16, all of us that ordered them before residuals were out were fairly unhappy as we expected similar to MY'15.

Hope you're sitting down. They're not great.

Ok I'll just ask the question since I'm not putting it together in my head. Why is the residuals better on a 39 month lease versus a 36 month lease?

BMW for whatever reason wants more vehicles coming back from lease 39 months from now (March 2019) vs 36 months from now (December 2018). |

Good point assuming you're in a state where the registration tags transfer to a new buyer. 36 vs. 39 month with a 1% residual increase to 39 saves roughly $50 a month, or ~$1,800 over the lease term. Of course the downside to 39 vs. 36 is you're also making 3 more payments, so those 3 payments + registration fees may offset the ~$1,800 savings. In California, a 39 month lease is almost always a bad deal vs. 36 for that very reason. Of course people don't think about that - they just see the lower payment.

If BMW keeps this up in going to have to get a 3 series next time. How can Anyone justify paying $100/mo more for the same car?

It's upsetting - I've been eying the 2 series since it's inception and my current lease is up. Much prefer it to the 3 series, but it's indeed a tough proposition to pay $100 more for the lower-rent 2 series.
I'm assuming BMW thinks it's resale will get it's lunch eaten by the m2, possibly m240i, or just doesn't think it needs to subsidize the sales of its enthusiast model. |

Audi and others are going to benefit from this in a huge way. As long as BMW doesn't chose to subsidize the leases anymore, the $ gap between cars is much narrower. Back when I got my m235 the S3 was nearly $200 more per month. Even for those who may have liked the S3 better, it was tough to like it $200 a month better. Now that's not the case.

If you don't like the lease rates, take advantage of the wonderfully low finance rates available and just buy the thing.

I don't see the 2-series as a lesser car than the 3-series, I see it as a more sporting one.
