M240i in the snow
So I'm thinking of replacing my 2013 C63 AMG with an M240i. I know it's a drop in power, but the C63 is hard to enjoy at anything but crazy speeds, is expensive to fill and maintain, and heavy.
I really want a 6-speed manual which unfortunately means no xdrive. How have fellow Canadians found the M240i performs in snow? Obviously I would get snow tires. |

Similar to the M240i but my 228i 6MT RWD is an absolute blast in the winter with a proper set of winter tires. Ran Blizzaks which are great on snow but meh on dry. Now have Alpin PA4's as the reality of our winters is they are getting dryer and dryer and the full snow driving is decreasing so I'm willing to give up some snow performance for a better cold dry experience.
Obviously ground clearance might become an issue in larger accumulations but never had an issue in three Wisconsin winters. During one particular storm I recall waiting for the first round of plowing but that was a 20" snowfall. Very few were out in the roads that day.

Snow tires (studless ice and snow not max performance) plus an ounce of common sense and you'll be fine. Assuming you're like most of us and can stay home if warranted and aren't a physician who needs to get to hospital at 3A in shit weather or something.

New 6MT M240i owner here. I'll know more in a few days/weeks when the snow starts falling, but I'm pretty confident; in the dry, this car hooks up a lot better than my old 6MT E92 335i, so I'm hoping this will translate well to winter conditions.
Putting on Michelin X-Ice later tonight... quality tires make a world of difference. |

Hey all, I have a M235i 6MT with Nokian Haka R2 snows square set up. I have to say the traction control does kick in a lot during really snowy days or if the ground isn't plowed. But the car moves and there is not one day that I got stuck--good news!
One thing to note is that while some snow ridges remained on the road, it does slip the tires a lot and the traction control comes in a lot leaving the car operating at slow speeds not by choice--but it's actually safer for you so I take that as a good thing. Initial 1st gear launch on snowy roads will also slip with RWD but once you get a little of that momentum going it will pick up, this is typical for all RWD cars. Don't cheap out on snow tires... Sometimes I put my car in EcoPro (Auto start-stop OFF) and drive with the throttle being severely limited so that it launches better.

Going into my 4th winter with Nokian WRG3s, square setup of 225/40R18 on my daily drive M235i. Very pleased with them.
They are winter-rated "all weather" (not all season) tires. I chose the WRG3s because they hit the sweet spot for our milder winters and flat terrain here in SW Ontario. They are fine in ice and on snow, while also performing well in warmer weather which wouldn't be kind to full bore winter tires. That said this car, and those tires, are a compromise in the winter. As others have said, a bit of common sense and a gentle foot go a long way in slippery conditions.

Kaltire is the main nationwide distributor, but there are others in the Toronto area: https://www.nokiantires.com/where-to...ealer-locator/
There are also other tyres besides the Nokians that will work well on a M240i. I’m very happy with the Pirelli Sottozero 3s on our car, no issue driving around Alberta and BC on them as a daily driver or on trips to ski resorts. |

To ensure you get them, you gotta get them a little on the early side. I paid for mine some time in October but didn't have it installed onto the car until mid November of 2016.

M235i RWD 6MT in the snow
This would be my second winter with my car and it is a blast in the snow. I opted for X-Ice tires (considered the Pilot Alpins as well) since I do most of the driving in the city - so generally at lower speeds - and I am happy with them.
Busy drive yesterday with all the snow and the city being slow at cleaning, but I enjoyed every second of it - safely. I do have the M-Perf front lip and my car looks like a snow plow on occasion, but I take it easy when the snow is deep and so far I had no incidents. I also have the LSD and I have to say it really adds to the fun in the snow. Traction is better, but you can spin much easier I tend to drive with Dtc on in the snow (or however they call having the yellow lamp on), since it allows a greater level of wheel spin before it cuts the power. Have all season run flats on mine and it crushes the snow, ...... in 6-8 inches of snow the other week, and people were driving insanely slow and hesitant, and I was flying around them at 10-15 MPH over the speed limit in full control, was crazy!

Hey All,
I'm looking to order my M240i this weekend. I'm a bit confused about what tires to get. I'm in Toronto Canada so we do get some tough winters. I was leaning towards getting the all season run flats but I've read this decreases the top speed. Is this true? In the summer I plan to track occasionally. How are the all seasons in the winter? Thanks |

Snow comparison
Hi: This may be of interest to you all. My 2016 M235i, manual, has Gislaved winter tires. Yesterday I drove a friend's rental jeep, not sure of the tires, in 4 wheel drive. Yes, the BMW was better in the snow, much better, and I sure missed the heated seats and steering wheel.
