Question Newbie question about dual climate control

Hi!

Just got a 2016 M235i convertible.

Something really surprises me - Apparently, when driving solo, there is no way to adjust interior temperature equally for both sides with a single control? I've owned several cars from various makes with dual climate control, and they always had a "sync" option that let the driver's temperature knob control the whole vehicle.

After reading the owners manual, and searching the web, it seems this feature just doesn't existing other BMW F series?

Am I missing something?

I have a 2016 also, and I've never found a way to sync them either. BMW seems to do things differently.

Sync is manual in this car. BMW must have heard how everyone wanted these cars to be manual (transmission) with no automatic syncing (rev matching) and must have misunderstood.

I suppose you could try running a rubber band across both dials!

Yes, as otherwise letting the passenger decide or turning them both oneself is so inconvenient and exhausting.

my '11 335 had a button to combine the two dials. My '20 240 does not. I don't lose sleep over it.

My wife's early 2000s 335i and her 2011 X3 had it, my '09 135i and '20 M240i do not. It's just one of those things that BMW doesn't want to put in the 1 or 2 series 'cause they gotta save that nickel on the extra button.

And I gotta say, I am not a particularly OCD person, but it drives me bugshit when I'm in the car by myself and the numbers don't match.

does anyone know if the F3x climate control panel can be swapped in, and would give sync function (with proper coding)?

Swapping in a different control panel is a lot of work just to avoid having to press a button! I have always followed a set-it-and-forget-it practice in all of my cars. I set both sides at 72F when I bought the car in early 2015 and have not pressed those buttons more than a dozen times in the interim.

Having them read the same is kind of defeating the purpose of dual controls. Put a rubber band around both knobs and they will move in sync.

I gather you don't live in western NY then. I cursed my Ford Excursion in the winter when the lowest I could set it was 65deg - 72 would cook us alive when dressed appropriately for conditions.

Especially having a convertible, the idea of not having to adjust the HVAC settings for a day no less a year is supremely implausible. I get that for your conditions it would work, but there are many where it won't.

It's annoying. I'd rather have single zone climate control, but also one of the most first world problems you can possibly have.

It seems pretty dumb to me on what was a $50,000 car, I have to turn to knobs each time I want to adjust the temperature. Also, it seems pretty dumb to me on what was a $50,000 car, I have to turn to knobs each time I want to adjust the temperature!

I rarely adjust mine.

For A/C, I aim the left and two center vents at my face; the right vent stays closed. Temps are 71 or 72 for the driver and 75 for the passenger (who isn't there). The fan speed stays at the lowest setting unless I've just gotten into the car and it's been sitting in the sun.

I can't remember as well what I do in the winter. That's an old-guy problem, not a first-world problem. In that season I only drive on dry, sunny days while wearing layers of warm clothing and a beanie. As in the summer, the temp settings are focused on the driver and the passenger side is set much differently.

You are obviously not married, especially to an older woman with menapause.

Should that be directed at my post (if so, I must admit I am most grateful! ), I would simply say that yes, I am, and on both counts.

However, it must be said that on an annual basis my postmenopausal better half spends no more than a few minutes in my car.

The fact is that we use the wife's 2015 Mazda 3 2.5-liter MT as a daily driver, and deservedly so. It now has 78K miles on it. My 2017 M240i, bought new in 2018, just cleared 14K miles. Once again, the math tells the story: in an urban environment, the MZ3 is a much more enjoyable car to live with on a day-to-day basis.

As always, everyone with an opinion may find that theirs varies. Mine often does!
