We have a ’15 F23 228i x drive (purchased used as a project car) and ’15 MINI S, purchased new and heavily modified (trophy to prove it). Had a great relationship with the local dealer but then the dealership was sold to an international firm the good SAs and mechanics left.

I found a local indi that was a factory trained mechanic. Was good but only would use 0W-20 oil changes. This was after we had conversations about what oil I wanted (as owner’s manual stated 0W-30 or 5W—30). My previous conversations with the previous SAs told me that BMW went 0W-20 for mileage regs from Europe and the new engines were modified for it. Not the previous models.

I am no longer a customer at the indi shop after a series of emails. He stated that he does not believe in BMW forums, only BMW factory bulletins. He implied that forums, such as this one, are full of stupid owners.

ECS Tuning has an OEM BMW oil change kit 5W-30, 6 qts or liters, oil filter, O-ring, and drain plug for $79.99, free shipping. I am going to change my oil in both cars from now on. Plugs as well. Cross referenced BMW part numbers and found OEM on Amazon and other sites. Still have my NEWtis subscription from my mod days.

Question/opinions: Is it better the raise the front of the car on ramps, nose up, or jack car and place jack stands at four points, horizontal, to change oil?

Everything else is crap. Castrol is cheap and Pennzoil even worse. Both don't meet BMW standards. BMW kits include 7 quarts oil, oil filter, copper washer and plug.

I prefer to do it the right way than being sorry later.
Lol bad advice. This guy thinks the BMW oil is top notch. It must be, “it’s a BMW”.

Everyone should do their own research and can make their own choices, there's nothing wrong with BMW products for maintenance.

Not all aftermarket parts and products are created equal, this is true, but at the same time.. thinking BMW manufactures their own parts is a little silly. They simply approve of the (insert thing there) and put their brand on it after it meets their their quality control.

I try to drain all my car's oil with the car level. I was doing my 2 on ramps for the first time and was like "ugh the car is not level" so I jacked up the rear to level it out..... nothing else came out, not even a drop.

My OTB car (other than bmw) has a drain plug in the middle of the pan, if you drain while on ramps a bunch of old oil is trapped.

Thanks for the observation/info. The location of the filter is interesting, easy change.

I ONLY, ONLY ever use BMW oil, if it ain't coming out of the blue bottle I don't use it. 10 years 2 BM's and NO engine (oil) related problems, 1st one 22k-180k
2nd 9k and counting

If you dont have the right tool, the oil filter location is not interesting and not an easy change. If I didnt have the correct big socket and a woggle extension or u-joint adapters I'd be cursing every oil change.

True. It is interesting to me that I will not have to crawl under the car to remove/replace the filter. Filter socket will pay for itself in one change. At least I will know what oil viscosity will be used.
