Man, that's a broad range. I guess 0w40 has the most flexibility then. Thanks man. My manual said 5w30 but those other grades were "optional".

Ok, I've spent a few hours traversing online for info on 0w-40 oils that meet BMW LL-01/LL-01 FE specs.
1. Castrol Edge (German) 2. Motul 8100 X-max (although on BITOG, they claim Motul isn't as good as Mobil 1, which in its current FS formulation is no longer approved by BMW) Amsoil European Car Formula I couldn't find any LL-01 approved LiquiMoly, Redline, She'll (non-OE BMW TwinPower oil).... Also, found out that Rotella T6 is not LL-01... Shit. |

So far, overwhelming response for the BMW OE oil. That said, which version do you buy?

0w 40 had a higher ambient temperature range than 5w30, I would prob. not run the 0w 40 in winter in Canada, but I live in FL so no problem 0w 40 is a better choice for the turbos, I think 0w-40 is more suitable for our turbo cars. Especially when you wot alot, you will see very high engine oil temp, 0W-40 will give you more protection on wot. You may see marginal fuel economy drop over 5w 30. |

Pennzoil (Shell) recommended oil for the m235i is Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40. It's what I'm using. 0w40, 5w40, 0w30, 5w30 are all acceptable according to my 2016 manual. Might switch to 0w30 for the winter if I can find a good one affordably.

It's a group 3 full synthetic made using a gas-to-liquid process rather than hydrocracking. It's not group 4 since the base oil is not a blend of PAOs.
The performance in tests of these Shell GTL oils has generally been very good and I've seen VOA of Platinum Euro where the additive package compared very favorably to any other I've seen. Group IV oils do not always exceed the performance of Group III. Of course, bobistheoilguy.com is the home to most of this info and speculation. Also: http://www.machinerylubrication.com/...ase-oil-trends note the numbers here are from 2002 at the latest and specific to hydrocracking. group III has only continued to improve. So I'm running and holding 17.5-18psi of boost and wanted more protection. Pretty soon will run upward of 20psi. Do you think Group III will stand up to that type of usage? I used to think that shear strength is everything but apparently detergent packages make a big difference too. Your thoughts? I'm royally confused. |

got no doubt it can. i'm sure you can find those running this oil in even more demanding applications.
group III can out perform group IV. Quote:

Fellas, Castrol 0W-30 Euro is where it's at. I won't get into the detailed chemical specifics, but it's extremely robust and behaves much like a 40 weight in certain instances.
