My Mercedes c class ABS pump in the engine compartment ticked loudly it’s entire life.

Hmmm...this is certainly possible. I always thought it was called simply the "vacuum pump". The pump is only a few hundred bucks, but getting it out is a bitch. That's why it's $2,000. I'd get a second opinion if possible.
