Thinking of selling

Talk me out of it.

As it stands, I’ve got a 228i Optioned nicely as my daily, an E34 525i Touring as the winter beater and an NA Miata fun car — mostly a track car. I do not need 3 cars. I live in a condo, my gf moves in next week, I’m taking up a ton of parking lol. I owe $16k on the 228i. It’s got 65k miles, some track time and two accidents on the carfax. It’s extremely well maintained despite all that and looks practically brand new. (Parts of it are) It’s never skipped a beat mechanically. What do y’all think? Do I have a chance of breaking even on the sale or would I be forced to eat a few $$? I guess my question really is, should I part with the E34 with the M50 bulletproof NA awesome sounding engine or the safer, more modern 2-series? Will I soon miss my window to sell before heavy depreciation? Thoughts?

DON'T DO IT!

As for the car, check KBB, but I'm guessing your either under water or will just barely break even on the loan on the 228.
Could either the 525 or Miata fill in as a daily driver? Do you need a winter car? Lots of people drive year round with a good set of winters. Can you use the 228 as a track car instead of the Miata?

Only you can make the decision which one or ones to sell. Good luck with the decision.

Tough one. If you're using the wagon as a wagon, I'd keep it.

At least you've got what looks like decent parking. I kept a sports car, a station wagon, and an all-around car on the street in San Francisco. That was a part-time job!

I don't understand the current market but definitely discuss it with the lady friend.

Can the "off season" cars be kept in another location? would the gf be willing to drive you around or share a vehicle?

I'll just say this - make sure this is lady friend is 'the one' before taking her input to the situation. Because if she's not the one, and you make a decision based on the input, when she's gone - it will hurt twice as much.

Thanks for all the replies. Appreciate you bunch. Some very good points all around — The lady moving in is a big step so I think one thing at a time is the right mindset to have until we’ve settled in a bit. I’ll update later on. Thanks for the thoughts guys

That's a very rare car. Reminds me of my old slick top 128 with a manual. I wouldn't sell it man. You'd have to go M in order to get a manual nowadays.

I'm not so sure you could get 16 for it, even in this market. I think that would be a stretch for mine anyway.

If you don't really want to keep it and have a fleet of other cars I'd still say why not. You're not going to get more for it than you'd get right now so if you feel the need to bail and get out of the loan this is a good time.

I really enjoy my car but even with the rarity of a highly optioned 6-spd, at the end of the day it's still just another 228.

It’s officially listed for sale. The carfax looks great, the fender bender is reported as minor damage, and the retail value is at 22k. I’m asking 20k, will probably settle at around 18-19k and still end up on top. Now is the time. It’s been a great car but I want to focus more on fixing up the E34 and keep modifying the Miata because I’m a track addict now lol.

Drove to Maine and back this past weekend for a gig. I didn’t see a single car on the road I’d rather be driving, per usual. I was originally going to take the E34 to start reconnecting with it and keep the miles off the 228i while I try to sell but I only went a few blocks before I smelled raw fuel, pulled over and saw it spraying out of the rail by the door.. then I noticed the oil by the diff.. the car gods were laughing as the headliner then collapsed in the rear on cue. Old car problems. Fine for a second car, troublesome if you’re needed somewhere on time. So thanks all for indulging me on this journey to realizing the 2-series is here to stay. I’ll figure out the parking later…

I don’t know why I do this to myself. Just test drove a 128i slick top 6 speed for fun.. Very solid little car. Lovely engine and gearbox. That’s quite an underrated package. I think Chris Harris once dismissed it as a “dumpy little thing” but I’d have to disagree!

This is a funny thread to me personally. . . I was in Maine last week driving my F22 around and feeling like I could definitely sell it.

Do you still have the car? I see you are in New Haven. I just had tires put on my car at BMW of Bridgeport. Had them do an appraisal for some entertainment value while I was waiting. 2015 M235xi. Creeping up on 70k miles. Needs brakes. Original owner, I keep my cars as nice as I can. Alpine white, Coral Red leather. They offered me 24k on the spot and a ride home. LOL. Some perspective: I bought out the lease 5 years ago for 32k at 28k miles. Looks like 41k trouble free, enjoyable miles has cost me 8 grand in depreciation. With 1k of fresh Michelin rubber on the car, now I need 25k. I think I’d get it with ease. Dealers are dying for some nice inventory. I’m actually considering this. I’m in the car 8 years come Halloween and probably all in for 53k total. To get almost half my money back on a car after 8 years sounds pretty fair to me.
Point being, now looks like a great time to bail if you are thinking about it. BMW of North Haven will take that off you in a flash for 20k I bet!

Tempting for sure, but remember if you need to replace it with something else, you'll pay the same premium on that purchase as the one you're getting on the car your selling to the dealership, and that's if you can find the actual car you really want.

Thanks for the insight — nice to have some local intel. I considered North Haven BMW but ultimately I decided to keep it. I’ve got a lot into it now and I know exactly what’s been done and when in terms of maintenance. As was mentioned above, it’s a rare spec car and I came to realize I would regret selling. That CDV delete mod can’t be overemphasized enough, btw. Having just done that, I’m in love with the car again.

That’s true on another used car, the premium that is, but I’m contemplating a factory order on a new M240, I’ve built one on the website for roughly 56k. If I can lock in the 25 for my car and some wiggle room on the new car, I might be able to roll off the lot in a new ride for a tick under 30k, balance paid in cash.Tempting for sure. My trusty 2002 Mustang GT fills the void while I wait.

I did see that you decided to keep the car. Nothing better than enjoying something that you love. I have to say my car has been extremely solid, putting some of the “unreliable”, “money pits out of warranty” BMW internet fodder out to pasture! Although I do wish someday BMW figures out how to seal the oil filter housing gasket for more than 80k miles. Mine is bone dry…for now
