Exclamation BMW F22 B48 (230i) Coolant Leak

Hey folks,

BMW 230i, F22, B48 Engine, 34K Miles, still under Bumper to Bumper 3y/36K warranty.

So I was coming back from a road-trip, had done about 200 miles, all in a sizzling central california ambient temperature of 100F +.

I stopped at a gas station and saw little bit of smoke coming out of the engine from under the hood. When I looked under the car I saw a LOT of coolant leaking from under the engine. I immediately checked the temparature which was normal and there no warning lights either.

At this point I obviously didn't drive further and called BMW roadside assistance. When the tow-truck arrived, the car started just fine but also had a LOW Coolant warning. The car is at the dealership now.

Questions:

1. What could be the cause? Leaky pipe? Radiator damage from under? Was it the high temps? Anyone else has seen a coolant leak in an F22 B48?
2. What are the chances of long term engine damage?
2. What can i expect from the dealership? I'm still under Ultimate Care, hopefully don't have to pay anything out of pocket.

Just trying to get ahead of the curve on this one. This has been my first issue with the car, otherwise has been running perfectly.

P.S - Will post more once I hear back from the dealership service center.

These cars are way smart for shutting down before allowing major damage. I don't think there is any chance of engine damage until it starts sending you all kinds of warnings. If it turns out to be rock-damage, there is a recall to put in a protective screen (but that is unlikely to cause big leaking; more likely you busted a return line).

As a 2018 230i owner, I look forward to your reply on what the dealer finds.

Thanks for posting!

Yeah worst day for the car to have a break down, they were closed for the holiday yesterday and are closed on Sundays.

Will only know more tomorrow.

I'm about to hit the 36K mark on my car pretty soon, this incident has got me thinking about extended warranty and see if it's worth it. (I don't have any mods on the car.) I feel like lots of things will start wearing out in year 4.

My brake pads are also nearing end of life and i can hear the squeals. I wonder if they could be squeezed in the current warranty.

BMW dealers usually follow the book quite strictly on warranty brake work. I managed to get it done on our X3 just under the wire a few months ago.

I would certainly ask about getting the brakes done, especially noting the noise, and any potential 'feel' issues like pulsing or pulling. My local dealership was quite generous with brake work - fully replaced rotors and pads after I burned them down to the rivets on day 2 of an HPDE. No way they didn't know that is what happened, no way they could have missed the piles of different colored brake dust from the track pads that I'd wiped out on day 1, and not even a question about it.

Are you not on a 4/yr 50/k warranty?

I am. Had a brain fade, the 36K is the Ultimate Care maintenance program. I am on the 50K/4Y warranty.

I don't think brake work is included in the warranty. It needs to happen inside the 36K/3Y Ultimate Care plan.

Finally got a word back from the dealer.

A bunch of things gave up.

The ventilation hose line from cylinder head to the expansion tank was broken and leaking. In addition the water pump was leaking as well.

Both were replaced.

They denied brake work citing that it's not due yet even when i said I hear squealing.

Front Brake linings are at 8mm each and the rears at 7mm.

Want to get brake work done before 36K, only have 1800 miles left. Should i just forcefully wear em' out?

Yours is an example of why this chart showing ownership expense data from Consumer Reports' subscribers looks the way it does:

Yeah we all go into buying these machines knowing that.

Most comments on forums tend to think it's a waste but I don't know trusty indie shops in SoCal. Will have to make a decision soon on whether or not to extend the warranty.

If you decide to look for one at some point, bimrs.org is one resource to consider when starting out: https://www.bimrs.org/find-a-shop.html.

So this just happened to me tonight. Coming home from work--about a 20 mile drive and pull in to the garage, get out and notice there is steam coming from the hood. I look under and there is something on the floor, I back the car out and look at it and it looks like coolant. I start the car and it finally gives me a warning that engine components may be hot and I should be careful opening the hood. I look down the driveway and notice I was apparently leaking coolant heavily as I drove down my road and up into the driveway. Just over 36k miles and it is CPO so it should all be covered under warranty.

Well, I checked the coolant level and it looks fine. Could the washer fluid reservoir have sprung a leak? I washed the windsheild and it still worked.

If that was the case, why the engine components may be hot message? I started it up again and got no warnings of any kind. This is so strange.

engine component hot message ALWAYS appears as the hood is released when the engine had been or is running at operating temperatures.

If you have a coolant leak you'll often get some steam at the leak if the car had been running at operating temp.

Definitely a coolant leak. Tried putting water in to drive it to dealership 4 miles away but it just poured right out of the car. Had to call roadside assistance.

They are finally picking it up in a few minutes. I'll post back what the problem turns out to be for posterity.

Finally got it back yesterday--had a loaner so it was not a big deal--and the paperwork says they found coolant leaking from hose between expansion tank and cylinder head.

17 12 14 48 Coolant hose with quick-release coupling leaking

part number B,17-12-9-845-173 hose, cylinder 1

Filled and bled coolant system and performed pressure test.

I guess it must have been a manufacturing defect as the car only has 36k miles on it. Everything completed with no charge of course.
