Jordan custom Ethanol tune vs. BM3 E30 tune on stock turbo

Hey everyone,

I have a 2014 m235i with FBOs:

Intake/inlet upgrade
PR ignition coils
Charge pipes
Intercooler
Straight pipe exhaust/downpipe
- I may have a dinan comp wheel stock turbo but the previous owner could not give me any proof it was purchased/installed so I am going with stock turbo lol. Still small

I am running the E30 BM3 tune currently. I will be installing a Dorch stage 2 hpfp soon and an upgraded diverter valve. Can anyone chime in on their experience with running a custom e30 or a higher ethanol blend like E50 with the stock turbo compared to the OTS tune?Is this a waste of money for the performance gains or is it completely worth the $600?

Thank you!

Cary comes highly recommended by many on the BM3 platform and for many good reasons. Performance and customer service to name two. So, its gonna be hard to answer if $600 is worth it solely based on performance gains, as I think his prices while competitive also reflect his demand and reputation..
A custom tune is going to be better then the OTS. You will have noticeable improvement and you will have the ability to max out the tune with your mods, or dial back, or customize to a specific track for example. So depending on what your going for then the price might be worthy.

Do you plan on ever upgrading the turbo, or adding more fuel modifications? i.e. port inject, meth? If the answer is yes, then I would say hold off on the custom and enjoy the OTS. Once all big mods are complete definitely get the custom tune.

If the answer is NO then refer to the first explanation I gave. If it is strictly only power gains your looking for with your current setup, then a customer tune with higher Ethanol then E30, is going be worth it, however, if 600 is to steep, then opt for a custom tune with another less expensive tuner.

SerenVox- Thank you! That was a very thought out reply. I have the same thought process and I do plan on going bigger turbo in the not so near future so I was contemplating trying to get the most out of a E50 tune without pushing the stock turbo too much (gain some top end timing). I keep seeing the name Jordan everywhere so I would rather pay for the experience (he is getting more and more too) than cheap out but I haven't seen a lot of dyno graphs or experience with people trying to get the most out of the stock turbo. I totally understand why as the stock turbo is not so efficient for this motor at higher boost levels.

I might wait like you mentioned so I am not forking out more money for another tune in the future. I haven't found a good comparison or gauge of the power levels I might see or gain coming from the BM3 E30 tune to a E50 mix on the stocker.

I have an E40 custom tune on my M235i. There is a substantial difference between the custom tune and the E30 OTS map because the OTS maps run conservative. With that being said, I maxed out on power with the E40 custom tune because the HPFP couldn't supply enough fuel. Only thing after FBO and E85 is fueling and turbo which starts getting expensive. If you're gonna wait a while before fuel/turbo upgrade I'd say get a custom E40 tune but maybe with a less expensive tuner?

Nice! You are right with the OTS tunes being conservative. I went ahead and purchased a Jordan tune. When I spend that extra $6,000 in the future for a Borg Warner upgrade and the rest of the fuel setup I will need (you are right it starts to get very expensive), I will be able to get a re-tune for $300 according to their team. Hopefully this works for a new setup with a turbo and fueling. Thanks guys for the responses!

In case others are wondering the same thing, I thought I would share the information given to me by the Jordan tuning team!

If you want more than one custom tune, we call this a bundle. First custom tune is retail $, and each one thereafter $299USD.

Full E85, N55(stock Turbo), requires Aftermarket HPFP and/or Auxiliary Fueling. No need for LPFP(dont know why people keep talking about/looking at LPFP's). If you still have the stock turbo, you could run up to Full E85 with the XDI-35 HPFP or other manufacturer equivalent(you have the Dorch).

N55(stock turbo), Aftermarket HPFP

-Full 85, roughly 450whp

NGK spark plugs gapped @ .020" for Full E85.

Just an update. With the Dorche stage 2 HPFP and stock LPFP, I was able to run E85 from the pump and hit a peak of around 21-23 psi which dropped near redline. The torque hits hard and I have pulled hard from a lot of V8s haha. I have not dyno'd the car but Jordan Tuned said around 450whp is to be expected on full E85 tunes.

I will be installing a pure stage 2 soon as well as some additional mods but the custom tune was awesome compared to the E30 map. BM3 now has a Stage 2+ E30 map iirc. I have not ran it due to having the full E85 custom tune but with a upgraded HPFP it should be a noticeable difference with higher boost!

You just convinced me on my next move..Dorche 2 pump + full e85 tune. Sounds like a serious perf bump from ots e20/e30 maps.

Did you do the install yourself on th d2 pump?

if you do plan to test that stage 2+ e30 map, we'd appreciate a quick review regarding overall power and also drivability. FYI, the ots tune can handle much more ethanol than e30 within the fuel trims, so maybe it makes it easier for you to go ~e50.

It def was a really nice gain! I did install the pump myself and took me half a day to do. Make sure to buy new seals for the intake manifold/throttle body if you want to remove the throttle body. I did not feel the need to remove the TB.

I may test the stage 2+ E30 but on the pure stage 2. If I remember correctly it was tested with a pure stage 2 hitting around 500whp. A custom map can hit a bit more. BM3 is badass for the OTS maps but if you want to push the car I would always reccomend a custom tune.
