Broke mine while installing an intake, seems pretty common!

Replaced mine yesterday as preventative, it literally came apart at both ends just by touching and moving slightly so. If you haven't done this, do it now. 50k miles for me on a 2015...

For what it's worth, just thought I'd echo previous posts that it's worth replacing early. My vehicle is pretty much right at the 5 year mark and the hose snapped on the way to work today. Really wishing I'd done the preventative maintenance, because getting parts and/or your vehicle serviced is a P.I.T.A. during a pandemic.

Mine broke over the weekend as well (50K). I bought two from FCP Euro -- one to replace and an emergency backup to keep in the trunk lol.

I thought I was the only one anal enough to keep a spare in the trunk. I even went so far a while back to research the quick connector ends and found several places that made them but couldn't order a couple of each most had 50 unit min orders.

Well this is the second car where this has happened (my old N54 E92 had the same design "feature") so the extra $35 is well worth avoiding being stranded .

Man, I wish I knew about this earlier. I was washing my car yesterday and decided to clean the engine bay. The act of wiping this with a microfiber cloth cause it to burst. I had been driving about 30 mins prior and it was about 90 degrees outside so the coolant was still hot and under pressure. It exploded and sprayed hot coolant all over me and the engine bay. Luckily it was only hot enough to "gently scald" me and not seriously burn me. Scared the crap out me though. Seems very dangerous.
This happened at 80k miles for me, bought the car CPO so not sure if it had been replaced before I got it. Definitely agree that these should be swapped out often for preventative maintenance. |

80k miles seems better than average. Mine went at just over 50k - thankfully in the office parking lot and not during the long trip i had planned the following weekend.

I just changed mine (2016 22k) and it was in good shape. Couldn't snap it with my hands after removal. At least I don't have to worry about it for a good long time now

This just happened to my parents in their 235. Got a call from them saying there's a message about low coolant, and they later said they were back home. Checked the reservoir, and there's almost nothing but a few tiny puddles of coolant at the bottom... I really hope it didn't run the pump dry, or worse, overheat. They didn't mention anything about overheating so hopefully it's okay... time will tell.

Just replaced my expansion tank hose. Need the car, so had to go to the dealer. Bought the same brittle OEM hose. I'm wondering if anyone has had luck finding an aftermarket replacement that is not so brittle?

I did some research looking to convert to a rubber hose and found hose ends that appeared to be correct but the min order was like 10 peaces for each fitting at $3 to $5 each at $100 just in fittings I found it to be cheaper to get one from FCP euro with a lifetime warranty.

I don't think...nor did I burp the system or have any special hearting settings or pre-start procedure to prevent air bubbles. |

To remove the hose, there is a pin that holds the line connector in place. You would need a pick or a small flathead screwdriver to lift the pin, then simple just tug on end of connector and it will come right out. The new hose connector locks back in by pushing pin back downwards. Coolant Bleeding Process: 1. Remove the bleeding screw (black screw) from the overflow tank 2. Using 50/50 BMW Blue Coolant/Distilled Water fill the overflow tank slowly until the coolant starts to escape from the bleeding hole at the overflow tank 3. Re-attach the bleeding screw 4. Replace the overflow tank cap 5. start the ignition on the car, without starting the engine 6. select the hottest temp on the a/c unit 7. select the lowest fan speed on the a/c unit 8. push the accelerator down to the floor for 10 seconds 9. you'll start hearing that the water pump starts working, it's bleeding the coolant system for you 10. Wait for 12-13 minutes until the water pump completes the bleeding cycle |

To echo what's been said, these are not only prone but probably a guaranteed failure point over time.
I had my replacement hose set aside and decided to change it as a preventative measure. As has happened to numerous others, it snapped when removing it from vehicle. Here is a picture, car has 46,000 miles.. Looks like I will be ordering the Flange piece next... Sucks there are so many plastic fittings/connections in these high heat areas. Not a good combo from the get-go. I assume over time, the heat cycling will deteriorate all of these types of connections right?
