Do I have an LSD?

How do I check whether I have an LSD? I got my resonators cut off and the mechanic at the shop said I have an LSD installed.

My car is a 2017 m240i RWD 6-speed manual. He kept insisting all manuals come with an LSD, but I think he meant a regular diff in general lol

I have some pictures from the resonator delete, but I didn't take any pictures of the diff itself. Can anybody check to see from these bad pictures sorry

LSD determination

Lift the rear wheels off the ground, put trans in neutral, spin tire by hand. If they both rotate the same direction you've got a LSD, if they spin in opposite direction you've got an open differential.

Thank you, I'll try it next time!

Yes. It was a rare option on 235 that was port installed (part of m performance accessories, and used to cost like $3000+). I am not even sure what's the deal with 240s, do they even have that option nowadays?

The m performance LSD is part number 33108659987. There's a sticker on the top of the LSD that would have this number. That sticker isn't really visible when the unit is installed.

The LSD also has a yellow sticker on the rear silver cover. This sticker is visible, if it hasn't been removed.

Other than those two visual clues, you would need to lift the wheels and spin.

@Kolyan2k - BMW part 33108659987 is still the LSD for the manual 240i, and it's still available for purchase.

Here's the original diff from when I retro-fitted my M Performance LSD:

The part number actually faces upwards, away from the road surface, when the diff is in situ. It can be read with difficulty, apparantly, either by using your mobile to take a photo or with a mirror.

This is the standard diff part number label close-up

For such an important part, you'd think BMW would forge or laser etch the LSD part number or something on the case, to indicate it's an LSD.

A little off topic, but how much did the resonator delete cost you?

$200 CAD (roughly $160 USD) for both of them. Opted for aluminized instead of stainless steel because I can always buy a new exhaust system after my warranty expires or reweld a stainless steel if I choose to keep it this way and it starts to rust after 5-6 years.

Overall I'm very satisfied with it. 20% louder exhaust overall and 100% more burbles in every gear.

Cold start is AMAZING now, my neighbours love me hehe

Not bad.

Has anyone installed a LSD on an X-drive model? I know that the AWD 240 has sufficient traction, but I also wonder if it would FEEL different, and how so.

Mine is my first AWD car-- and I've never had, prior, anything but FWD. I've had the vehicle for a little over a year now and I'm thinking about what can be done to make it better. The run-flats are going to go as soon as the weather breaks. That will be a good start. But as it is, I'm not too jazzed by the way the car feels accelerating out of turns. I'm not sure I know how to articulate the reasons WHY I feel that way. Come this spring with performance rubber, I'm really going to get to know this car!

With the back roads in your region and Watkins Glen being only a couple of hours away, you have a lot to choose from up there!
