B58 cold start engine rattle
Needs help here, dealership refuses to acknowledge, telling me this is normal
Unable to replicate the issue b/c car is wrm already when i hv to drive to dealership Engine rattle happens pretty much every cold start, after the rpm dial down, roughly 30 sec after start up, car start shaking (also sounds like) like a washing machine. Did some search on forum, some suggested it would go away ard 5k mile, now i m at 10k km and is still here. It is really hard to capture shaking on phone camera so i put a bucket of water to capture the reflection. ( will upload the video shortly) https://vimeo.com/244231529 Thought ? Can definitely hear it......kind of sounds like buzzing/rattling before 27sec but at the 27-34sec it almost sounds like it's sputtering...is your idle bouncing around at that time?

Sounds like exhaust valve rattle. There is a butterfly valve that opens and closes during certain parts of cold start and normal driving to flow more or less exhaust to accommodate noise and efficiency. It is located on the drivers side near the muffler on the M235i. If you search you will find your not the only one with this issue. I would assume BMW would replace it with no issue. As for the shaking mine has givin a sort of vibration/shaking under cold start and goes away after cold start. May be a combination of the two ?

Same experience here. 2017 M240i with about 37k miles. only happens after cold start. I would describe as light metal clinkling/rattling noise. any update on resolutions?

I just learned to live with it. Dealer checked out said it was fine and normal due to emissions.

Could the light metal clinking/rattling noise just be the rapid heating of the exhaust and cat? It does run just to the left foot of the passenger side foot well. These noises are usually amplified with a downpipe with or without a cat. Seems that a lot of people hear this after installing one of them. Not to say that you have one, but maybe it is what your are hearing.
But the shaking could just be a coil pack that is a little bit weak that evens out when warm. My wife's Mini Cooper S has this issue every 30k miles it seems. So I just replace all coils and plugs and issues go away. And mileage comes back to 35-38mpg. Worth a try. I don't have any shakes with my M240 yet...31k miles. |

I had the same issue, and found the attached TSB - take it to your dealer for inspection/repair
