Ouch!

So last week I got rear ended during rush hour traffic. Relatively minor damage, and thankfully no injuries, but still a bummer. We are heading out on a fall color road trip tomorrow and we have to drive the Jeep now while we await repairs to our 2. Should be all done by the end of next week. Since she caught my wheel, there was damage to some of the x-drive components, that made the total damages in excess of $5700.

A few years back my wife barely tapped the rear end of a BMW 3 series in our old 4runner. She and the BMW driver assessed the damage and both agreed there was only a scratch but we provided our insurance info just in case. It was like $3500 because the bumper had to be replaced. These cars are expensive to fix!

I actually guessed it would be $7000. There is a crease in the metal that needs to be repaired and painted, the bumper cover and all is brackets, etc. Rear taillight housing, wheel, tire, control arm, axle, some other mechanical stuff for the x-drive. I haven't seen a comprehensive list yet, but it's a lot of stuff. And these collision repairs are stupid expensive these days just like everything else. And when the body shop is done, I plan to have my regular mechanic look it over just to be sure nothing got missed, mechanically speaking.

Oddly enough the bumper looks to be in good shape. Other than the tire marks... as mentioned above, glad it wasn't worse. Hope your baby is whole again soon.

Yea, it kind of looks that way. She hit me pretty hard though so maybe it was a little worse than it looks. They are using all BMW parts though.

With all respect, you don't know at all what you are talking about.

A body shop has to completely dismantle the damaged area to understand what's going on. It takes time and this is expensive. Furthermore, you cannot install aftermarket parts on a BMW because they will not fit, period.

Two year ago, I had a family member who had collision damage on the entire left side by a hit and run drunk driver. His 2018 340i was not looking that bad. The insurance paid $22K to fix and it took 6 months.

Sorry Mam....... you need to get adequate insurance coverage for your BMW because you never know what may happen.

It's true, the wheel probably took most of the force judging by the huge chunk taken out of the lower section there... and it wasn't the normal "up/down" that the suspension is designed for. There's a lot of moving parts designed to move a certain way in that wheel well.

With all due respect, I absolutely know what I'm talking about, I've got 40 years experience. Insurance is one of the biggest scams going. PERIOD

They will take everything apart and tell you all kinds sh*t that's how they make money. PERIOD. If you want a proper honest analysis of NON bodywork related, take it to an INDY.

Are you sh88ting me aftermarket parts won't fit, what you been smoking, I've had aftermarket parts fitted to my Porsche and my 128 needed a new rear bumper cover. I'll see if I can dig up a picture (I'm at work now) PERFECT fit , 100% perfect and perfect paint match.

Unless your insurance will only fit OEM (depends on the policy) you can bet your a$$ they WILL fit aftermarket products.

You def need to get adequate insurance cover for ANY vehicle that's true, but don't believe for one second any insurance or bodyshop will give you a fair shake, and you go into any work and accept what they say on face value, they will play you for a chump.

Insurance are there to take money from you and then try there best to not pay you back or cheap out. They are a multi-billion $ business for that reason. And body shops are the same, your $7000 job will cost them a grand, they will say there ftting OEM parts and with AM, and you will NOT know the difference

I've dealt with a few accidents during covid. The shop hourly rates are all up from covid, but the price of parts is just insane. Just like car prices are 30% too high, PARTS are more than that.

Then factor in that everyone (insurance, auto body, junkyards) all WANT you to total the car so it can be sold as used at the 50 to 60% inflated used car prices and everyone wants the car totaled but YOU. Because now you have an insurance check for a totaled car and no used cars to shop for at that price point. Or god forbid you didnt have collision now you need another car with no money while everyone else involved gets a taste of your totaled car being resold.

Not even close to totaled in my case. And all BMW parts. I insist on perfection in the repair. But this body shop has been excellent to work with so far, as has been my insurance company
