Exactly why I also carry a spare tire in my trunk as well. I'm in Europe so add in different languages and currencies(in some cases) and your better off with a spare.

At first I had the euro space saver spare tire from E9X 335i. Its not sold in the states bc the tire does not have any DOT labels. But you can order just the allot wheel and buy a tire locally or thru Tire Rack. Some 1Addicts figured out that a Mitsu space saver works fine on our cars. Do a search to look up that thread.

However once I had to use my mini space saver(in the rain) that was a scary drive. 3.5 inch wide wheel on the LR and 8.5 inch wide wheel/tire on the RR. The rear end wiggled the entire trip! It wasn't long before I switched to a FULL SIZE spare.

I bought a steel wheel for a e46 330i. The wheel has the perfect dimensions... ET45(I think?) 7jx17. I put a 205/50HR17 tire on it. I am ready for my next flat!

BMW makes a cargo net tie down... I actually bought it but have yet to get around to installing it.

That looks like a good way to go. Certainly cheaper than tire/wheel insurance and much quicker to strap on and get going.

I wouldn't drive around all day with it in the trunk unless I were going on a trip. I would keep one of these at home, it wouldn't take much to have someone bring it to me so I could just get on.

Update: I need a new wheel and tire. Should arrive on Thursday. Turns out the T&W protection only covers $500 for the wheel and $250 for the tire, so I will still have to pay a little bit.

was the wheel bent or was there a crack? This has been a problem with some of us in the past. My wheel broke after hitting a rock at low speed. I wonder if there is a flaw in this wheel?

Not sure. I'll ask when I pick it up.

Just received my new tire and it doesn't take up that much room. The BMW net holds it in place.

Thanks. I will call my local store and see what they say.
I also picked up insurance for $200 total from Mr. tire. Just drove up a few days after I got the car and insured them. also covers free tire rotations, and if you do end up busting a tire, they prorate the cost based on the tread. Pretty good deal.

Please let us know the total cost once it is fixed. I have the wheel and tire protection from the dealer and I would be disappointed if I had to come out of pocket over something like this. I think it is nonsense that bmw would switch to non-runflats without at least giving us a jack and enough space to fit a spare. I agree that a runflat probably would not have survived the impact, but at least you could get home and go to the dealer the next day. I will be picking up some of that tire sealant tomorrow and hoping for the best. I've found the wheel and tire insurance usually pays for itself with the low profile tires on NY roads.

I ended up having to pay about $100. The T&W protection covered $500 for the wheel and $250 for the tire. The wheel put me over the limit. I'm not one to argue over things like that, but I was slightly annoyed. Turns out I only get $2500 in total coverage, but there are still limits for each tire and wheel. Not sure I understand that logic. It would also be nice if they adjusted those limits for cars with non-run flats since they cost less than RFs.

Another thing that annoyed me was that BMW roadside didn't believe me when I told them I don't have runflats. I'll probably just call AAA next time.

Yea $100 is not the end of the world but I agree that the protection should be different for cars with non-runflats and it's very annoying that even my dealer didn't know the car had traditional tires. It makes no sense that they offered me unlimited protection on my last car with $400 runflats but won't do the same with cheaper tires that usually would require a tow to replace. Does the plan/roadside cover the tow or did you have to come out of pocket? I'm going to call my dealer tomorrow and see what my tire protection covers.

Do you mind me asking what you paid for the tire and wheel protection? How many years does it cover you for?

Not sure that RFTs would have prevented need for a tow: I hit a pothole last spring in my F30 that ruptured both right tires. I needed a tow despite supposed "run-flats."

Sorry for your loss. Hopefully your rims weren't damaged (mine were).

I hit a pot hole and immediately looked at my TPS monitor. Right rear started to drop right away. Good thing I bought the tire and wheel protection.
